Getting visa exempt entry while on an existing visa

Hello,
So I’ve been studying Chinese for a year in Taiwan and have recently become interested in getting a job arranged after my visa expires, but there’s one thing I’m not sure of–
I have a one year resident visa which cannot be changed into a different visa. Because of this I have no choice but to do a visa run. The thing is, will the immigration officers at the airport give me a 90 day visa exempt waiver if I already have an ongoing visa? I plan to do the visa run just before my visa expires, but I have no experience with this and do not know if possessing an existing visa, particularly one that is non transferrable, precludes me from the visa exempt waiver.

Does anyone have any experience with this?
