GF's Birthday is coming and I have no clue what to do! Help

I am a few bananas short of a happy monkey here. I can usually think things up on my own pretty good; however, Taiwan being so new to me I am having some trouble coming up with good ideas. Your assistance is greatly appreciated…

My GF’s birthday is this Wednesday, July 12th. She has an important test for her piano class the day of her birthday at 7 to 8 pm. This kind of puts a monkey wrench into planning anything that night. She works and I have school during the day…so a day thing is out of the question too.

I am on a limited budget and can’t afford a really expensive night…my budget is such that I can afford around 2000 NT total. She isn’t into jewelry, clothes, or fancy stuff. She enjoys being with friends, going out to eat, and relaxing. Cake isn’t really her forte either. Thinking up a gift is really hard right now. She said she doesn’t want a gift and wants us to save money. But I can’t let the day go by without doing something for her…that would be heartless!

Help please! Any romantic birthday ideas for the Taipei area?

My advice, and I’m no expert, would be to get the b-day thang done early in the day. Keep It Simple. Sing a ballard on the MRT on the way to work. Say something goofy with some music, flowers and some chocolate, and all will turn out well. :star:

Best of luck, :grandpa:

Go up to Beitou for a hot spring. Then have tea or a drink on the outdoor deck at the top of the road.

Maokong teahouse. The one with the glass floor and private booths. Very nice indeed. (And really easy to get to. Don’t listen to Dr Zoiiberg, all the taxi drivers know the area.)

Tea and snacks at the old Wisteria teahouse then a walk through Daan Park (all in the same area).

Derek,
Don’t be a wuss. If you ain’t careful, before long you are going to be some pussy whipped ^&*(@#! Birthdays aren’t a big deal for Taiwanese; personally, I think the mere fact that you know the date of her birthday is pretty romantic. I don’t remember stuff like that. Just invite her out for a meal, simple or otherwise. If you want to be romantic on the cheap, you could:

  1. learn some cheesy romantic Chinese phrases to say to her
  2. sing her a love song
  3. write a poem for her
  4. write her a few pages of a Mills and Boon style novel with you and her as the lead characters

It’s 2:30 in the morning John. Do you know where your beer is?

Half of it is inside me, and the other half is nearby. Are you up so late drinking water?

Well, part of what I’m drinking is water.

No girl on any planet would ever be angry if her man bought her a day at a spa. With facial, massage, mani/pedi/ whatnot.
It isn’t about beauty, It is about being spoiled rotten.
And then afterwards taking her to a wonderful dinner somewhere quiet she would enjoy.
Yeah, baby.

But being on a budget, I say take her to TongHua night market and getting her an essence massage for 600 nt and then buying her a late dinner somewhere quiet.

Shit. I need a boyfriend.

It’s tough when you’ve got a walker.

Dinner at Alleycat’s, a red rose, and a tastefully framed photo of the two of you at one of your happiest moments together should do it very nicely and still leave you change for the taxi fare home.

I think it has been mentioned before but its worth remembering that if all else fails you can give a kangaroo ball pouch purse.

Yes, then she can keep Derek’s balls safely inside that.

Buy her a new duck! Sorry! Just had to say it!

Sogo voucher?

Now that is sweet :bravo:

I agree that is the winner. I would just add a walk through Daan Park, which is nearby Alleycats, after dinner.

Or maybe after Alleycats, you coul stop off for some mango ice at Ice Monster on nearby Yongkang Jie, and then carry on to Da’an Park for your romantic stroll.

I would say you can’t go wrong cooking up your own romantic dinner. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. I think a pretty easy suggestion would be spaghetti. Just chop up some veggies and meat, throw them in with your sauce, and let it cook for about an hour. French bread with some garlic butter, shredded cheese for the pasta and the bread, a bottle of red wine, some candles and you’re set. A nice picture in a nice picture frame for a gift and I’d say you’d make the lady more than happy. Good luck with whatever you do.

Oh, if you do cook, you might want to invite family. Might not be the way you would do it at home, but having her man cook for her folks goes down a treat with my SO.

Nothing says “I love you” like a ball gag.

Just remember to come up with a safety signal before using it.
