Went here for an office party last evening.
Sort of Euro/French cuisine with such items as lobster, crab, pork knuckle, filet of sole, prime rib, etc, on the menu.
The most expensive dish was the lobster at $690, and comes with a set of extras: caeser salad bar (toss your own), crepe bar, goose liver soup (or seafood), escargots, dessert (sorbet and fruit crepe), coffee.
The lunch menu is much cheaper.
Several of my colleagues ordered the pork knuckle, which was gigantic. THey seemed to enjoy it.
I had the lobster, which was alright, but it was smothered in bechamel sauce (not my fave sauce–a bit bland for me, so I had to liberally douse it with tabasco). I’d try the Sole with scallops next time.
Supposedly, Mayor Ma was in there other night with his entourage.
Nice place for a cozy date that won’t break the bank. Around the corner from Watersheds.
We go to the Tienmu location alot. Didnt know they had one downtown. Try the spicy juicy garlicky fillet of beef on their lunch menu. One of my favorite restaurants.
The Tienmu location is just as Alien posted above. Coming from Tienmu towards Yang Ming Shan, you go up Tienmu N. RD. and its the 1st small alley on the left which is adjacent to a canal. Gilleys is down the alley about 50 yards on the left. It is alot better than the downtown version which we tried. Not the same owners.
Given the reasonable prices at Le Jardin, I for one will not be venturing anwhere else when in Tienmou for French. I have had too many faux French experiences in Taipei to wish to try out the latest stir fry with cream sauce or should I say creme sauce? Meanwhile, the food is some of the best in Taipei (Le Jardin) or try the sister restaurant La Terrasse behind Swensen’s on Tun Hwa No Rd.
Its either the Ritz Paris 1930 for “establishment” French cuisine or Le Jardin and La Terrasse for bistro cooking. Ain’t seen nothing else in town to sway me so far.
haha was that a joke? Don’t be so conservative. Nevermind, political thread reference.
Le Jardin, which I absolutely swear by, is located on Chung Cheng Rd. Sec. 2 #170 or something like that right across from the baseball stadium and next door to the Jasper Villas apartment complex. It is French owned and has one of the best wine selections on the island. Food prices are very reasonable.
Gilley’s at Anhe Road was closed about three years ago. The location is taken over by Chef Show Time 阿正廚房. Fusion creative cuisine. The chef is highly talented and got quite a large cult-like following. I had some amazing food there. But his obsession with balsamico turned me away eventually.
Le Jardin at its peak was a pretty good restaurant, and I enjoyed quite a few meals there. Unfortunately it closed quite some time ago.
[Edit: sorry, just realized you were probably asking about the “Gilley’s” place in the OP. I’ve never been there and don’t know.][/quote]
Thanks! Actually, I’m really just rooting around to see what reasonable French fare there is in town. Seeing how Gilley’s is closed (thanks, LPeterC!), if anyone has any info on French fare in Taibei, please post it in the French cuisinethread. Thanks!
It’s still around, but in a different location. (Ignore the photos. Those are for the old location.)
It’s now where the Porch Gallery furniture store used to be, in a lane to the northeast of the traffic circle at Zhongshan North Road and Tianmu East/West Road, very close to G&G’s/Willie’s Deli.
