It has been reported that a 15 year-old girl was raped and murdered. The youth alleged to have committed the crime is the son of a senior county official, so the police are looking the other way.

Is this a recent event, or referring to this one that happened back in January 2007?
Thousands Riot, Burn Sichuan Hotel After Girl’s Death. January 18, 2007.

Thousands of local residents have converged on a four-star hotel in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, setting fire to the building in protest at the death and alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl who worked there.

Mobile phone footage taken Wednesday (see above clip) outside the hotel in Dazhu township showed confused and raucous crowds in darkness in front of a burning building as crowds gathered outside. Witnesses said the crowd reached 20,000 at its peak late Wednesday.

“There are still around a few thousand people on the scene and they protested outside the hotel this afternoon,” a shop owner near the Nest Business Hotel in Daizhu told RFA’s Cantonese service.

Hotel worker Yang Daili, who some Internet accounts said was a karaoke hostess, was found dead in a hotel room on Dec. 30. Police enquiries initially yielded little evidence, and the hotel said she had died of an overdose.

But the girl’s friends and classmates pursued the matter and began a protest in the hotel, drawing public attention.

The riot was triggered, residents said, after the hotel posted a notice denying any involvement in the girl’s death. Protesters stormed the hotel and vandalized it, then set fire to it.

Police announced Thursday they had arrested two suspects in the case of the girl’s death. One was described in official media coverage as ’suspected rapist Liu Chikun’.

The report, by Sichuan Online and rebroadcast by Phoenix TV(ZH), said local leaders had ordered an investigation into possible business links between local police and the hotel.

An officer who answered the phone at the Dazhu police station declined to give further details.

“I have just com on duty and we haven’t got any updated information yet. How can I tell you the current situation outside?” he said.

Two Chinese-language forum posts translated into English by Hong Kong-based blogger Roland Soong said Yang was drugged and raped repeatedly by karaoke room clients until she died.

China sees thousands of “mass incidents” across the country every year.

While many are civil rights protests over land disputes, unpaid wages or environmental issues, spontaneous outbursts of anger and violence are occurring over numerous issues, including changes in business licensing regulations, perceived miscarriages of justice, or fraudulent advertising claims. There’s oodles of Chinese mob scenes on the net, by the way.

In Chinese

Apparently the police weren’t looking entirely the other way…
AFP news agency said riots had erupted on Saturday when the girl’s uncle was pronounced dead in hospital after seeking justice for his niece.

It quoted locals saying he had been badly beaten - it is not clear by whom.
Statistically, this is a daily (multiple-times per day) event in China.

There are a lot of angry people in China.

And some of them make it here via the interweb.

That site I linked to above has on occasion hosted some pretty amazing footage of pitch battles between local thugs and villagers - they look like something straight out of the Warring States period - caught on mobile phones.

HG

Dunno…looked a bit like the No. 2 Metro line at rushhour…

Yes, that’s a great site. Very informative, thanks for the tip. BTW, did you notice that there’s an irritating poster on it, who always seems to like to find fault with the Western point of view, and never acknowledges it when someone scores a point against him? I think his name was “AC” or something like that.

^ Hahaha. Yes, I think that name rings a bell or two alright.

No kidding and no surprise either. >_< I remember all those angry parents over the loss of their children after the earthquake. And they deserve the right to be angry/upset.

Duplicate post

I saw this on Liveleak last night, it looked like a rebellion against the Public Security Bureau.

With a bit of luck these demonstrations will spread and the central government will hesitate at supressing them because of the Olympics. As happened in South Korea actually.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Summe … outh_Korea
Hosting the 1988 Olympics presented an opportunity to bring international attention to South Korea. The idea for South Korea to place a bid for 1988 Games emerged during the last days of the Park Chung Hee administration in the late 1970s. After President Park’s assassination in 1979, Chun Doo Hwan, his successor, submitted Korea’s bid to the IOC in September 1981, in hopes that the increased international exposure brought by the Olympics would legitimize his authoritarian regime amidst increasing political pressure for democratization, provide protection from increasing threats from North Korea, and showcase the Korean economic miracle to the world community. South Korea was awarded the bid on September 30, 1981, becoming the 16th nation, the second Asian nation (following Japan in 1964) and the second newly industrialized economy (after Mexico in 1968) to host the Summer Olympics.

In an attempt to follow the model of 1964 Tokyo Olympics as a rite of passage for the Japanese economy and re-integration of Japan in the family of nations in the post-war era, the Korean government hoped to use the Olympics as a “coming-out party” for the newly industrialized Korean economy. The Korean government hoped the Olympics would symbolize a new legitimacy of Korea in world affairs.

However, this attempt to provide legitimacy to the Korean government, especially the Chun administration, backfired. The anticipation of the Olympic Games intensified world scrutiny of Korea during a time of political crisis. As political demonstrations emerged in June 1987, the possibility of jeopardizing hosting the Olympic Games contributed to the June 29 declaration which issued President Chun out of power and led to direct elections in December 1987. The desire not to taint the Olympic Games with military dictatorship and riots served as an impetus for Korea’s transition to democracy. Roh Tae Woo served as the transitional president, directly elected by South Koreans in December 1987, during the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. The 1988 Olympic Games provided a catalyst for controlled political change to maintain stability in South Korea.
I must say the prospects for that don’t look particularly good though. It’s hard to see how demonstrations in some provincial backwater could spread to cities where they would threaten the government.

Plus this seems to be people attacking the regular police rather than the ‘political’ police. As far as I can tell the PSB is a regular police force, it is the MSS which is the Gestapo/KGB equivalent.

In this instance, Beijing and you are onside hoping to see the end of these regional tyrants. One way to view this sort of event is to consider the local folks are buoyed by a sense the local idiots are acting outside what the central government wants. if they draw attention to it, the heat comes down on the regional party and police hacks.

HG

Apparently, a teenage girl was raped and killed by a youth with connections.

But the government doesn’t want to tarnish its image ahead of the Beijing Olympics, so there seems to be a cover-up.

Great, this means it’s a blank check to commit all sorts of crimes in the PRC, because, wait, they want the appearance of a great nation, not the reality.

Ok, i guess this thread should be merged with trebuchet’s, but here’s an update:

kansascity.com/659/story/685047.html

Apparently, the investigation is being reopened.

The showstopper:
Provincial Communist Party Secretary Shi Zongyuan visited the area to stress “the importance of social stability,” Xinhua said.

“We must put maintaining social harmony and stability on the top of our agenda,” Shi was quoted as saying.
read: I don’t give a damn about some dead girl, just don’t make me look bad in front of my boss.

i have been in china for 5 months after years spent in taiwan. i always thought i’d come here “ready”. i have to say this news doesnt surprise at all. there are a few other recent “events” the government had to do damage control for (damage control here basically means censorship, jail…).

i can’t describe how horrific this country is…

Yeah after my time in China I thanked God for how “down to Earth” Taiwan is in comparison. China is making advances but there are definitely some very cold aspects of that culture that keep me from truly considering a move there.
