Before Moderna was evil, now it’s the saviour. Is that the new thing ? Will be interesting what the anti vaxxers attitude to this will be, I know they have been working on these cancer vaccines for a longggg time.
Any claims of ‘AI was instrumental’ needs to be taken with a large dose of salt in the clinical field until now . 99% of these breakthroughs are from steady clinical research over a period of decades.

It analyzed each patient’s tumor and normal DNA/RNA sequencing data plus HLA type, then used machine-learning models to rank and pick the up to 34 mutations most likely to trigger strong T-cell responses. Separate AI handled scheduling so thousands of unique batches could be made and delivered on time.
This is groundbreaking because it is the first time a fully personalized mRNA cancer therapy has succeeded in a large Phase 3 trial—proving that a medicine designed from one individual’s tumor mutations can meaningfully outperform standard care (Keytruda alone) at preventing melanoma recurrence. The concept had been aspirational for decades; AI made the design and manufacturing practical at clinical scale.
Machine learning has been used for years and year ,if we want to call it AI , well…that’s being a bit cheeky. To get to Phase 3 would have taken enormous amounts of scientific work and money already and some positive results in the animal models.
I’m not saying AI won’t help, it definitely will, but it’s not at the base of these discoveries and therapies coming to the market. Maybe future ones like 5 or 10 years out…let’s see.
The thing about predicting is that that’s all AI can do, predict, with a personalised therapy you literally have to try it first to see if it works. One could imagine preparing a number of different vaccines for the same person could also be worth it. Hence making these quickly and affordably could be key.
The combination therapy here is pretty exciting , combination therapies seem to work the best. Very expensive I imagine.

It hasn’t actually. It just involved a quicker analysis of the epitopes to be chosen, but as I said we use machine learning and predictive algorithms to do this work for 20 years already. These breakthroughs are iterative processes dependent on layering on decades of research to understand disease and then careful clinical trial design and huge risky investments. For instance sequencing of the human genome and tumours and HLA genes, constructing the sequences into an mRNA molecule , encapsulating it in a lipid nanoparticle, none of that is dependent on AI.
This is a positive result of a very very expensive and labour intensive clinical trial. It’s a clinical trial result not a publicly available treatment. We don’t know the cost or turn around time of this treatment.
Actually running this as a medical treatment that is standardised and affordable for patients is the next major step, this doesn’t require AI to do this, but improvements from areas such as regulatory, production, quality control, centralisation, logistics, training licensing. Getting it approved by insurance companies and governments , very little of this is dependent on AI.
Isn’t that what “practical”means here?
AI made the design and manufacturing practical at clinical scale.
