Is this a global trend?
It certainly wouldn’t be the first time the race card has been played in New Zealand politics. I remember the National party waging a very xenophobic anti immigration election campaign in the 1970s with migrant workers from the Pacific Islands being on the receiving end. Of course during the 50s and 60s Pacific Islanders were encouraged to come in droves to NZ to fill manual labour vacancies (as were Maori encouraged to move to the cities) When the well dried up there were a lot of unemployed people, consequent social problems and divisive politics.
