Gmail ... just great when it comes to spam

My gmail accounts are just great spamwise … it channels all spam into my spam folder without me touching any settings …

Yeah, but holy shit, after a year and a half with gmail I now get about 50-100 spams a day! I’ve also found that certain people who were legitimately invited to e-mail me got caught in the Spam filter.

ermmmm

my yahoo account does that too, pretty effectively too, hardly any mistakes…

isn’t that your minimum expectation from your email provider nowadays?

Not at Hinet, they don’t …
Not at Hinet, they don’t …
Yes well, considering the number of spammers they host, that’s not a big surprise!

I do wish I could apply gmail’s filtering tech to my POP accounts though. They do an amazing job. I think I have lost like one legit mail to the gmail filters since inception, and had zero spam in my inbox. :bravo:

+1 … Gmail is great with spam… Sometimes something that is automated, but I DID register to will be sent there, but never any normal emails… once or twice though, spam has made it’s way into my inbox

gmail may be a lot better than hotmail – hotmail sucks and I only check that account every few months to delete the 100s of spam emails – but for personal emails I use my own address through my own domain that I registered, and I don’t believe I’ve received a single spam email there in over a year.

Plus, the great thing about getting email through your own personal domain, is you get to choose any name you want, subject to availability. For example:

ilovetaiwan.com is already taken
godaddy.com/gdshop/registra … 2B&ci=7007

as is taiwansucks.com
godaddy.com/gdshop/registra … dr=&ci=574

but iloveannettelu.com is still available
godaddy.com/gdshop/registra … 2B&ci=7007

as is taiwansucksdonkeydicks.com
godaddy.com/gdshop/registra … dr=&ci=574

Would you rather receive emails at johnsmith@gmail.com (yawwwwwwwn :snore: )

or johnsmith@crazymonkeyfucker.com (still available, grab it fast)
godaddy.com/gdshop/registra … 2B&ci=7007

The answer should be obvious.

I won’t tell you what domain name I chose.

Interestingly enough, TaiwanSucksAHorsesCock.com seems to still be available too…

The interesting thing to me is how gmail seems to do better or worse at spam filtering for different people. I’ve been using it exclusively for a couple of years now, and have my email address pasted all over the web (like below), but get only moderate spam in my “spam” box and basically none in my inbox.

But other people get loads. I have to wonder, what are they doing to attract so much spam?

The ONLY thing I use my Gmail account for is Gmail drive. (If you don’t know what that is, go here --> http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm - basically it makes a virtual drive out of your gmail inbox space. I use it for making backup copies of important files.) I have never sent an email from my account, nor have I ever used that email address when filling in a form on a webpage. In other words, except for me and Gmail, no one should know that my email address exists. Still I get plenty of spam and junk mail in the junk mail folder.

So the moral is, you don’t necessarily have to be doing anything to attract the attention of spammers. Of course, plastering your email address all over the web doesn’t help.

The moment just one spammer gets your e-mail address … you’re all over the place

I had never gotten any spam, period, at the regular e-mail address I use - until I forgot the number one rule and posted that address, instead of my Yahoo! one, here at Forumosa when trying to sell some stuff. After that, the spam started flooding in, and it just keeps getting worse. :frowning:

I noticed that recently, one or two spams are getting through the filter… :s not a good sign

Than you need to mark it as spam and google will adjust …

Hinet engineers have told me that it is illegal to filter customer’s email. This was at a technical conference during a special session on spam.
