It seems to me that I just show up with contract, wait and hope for an English speaker and tell my story.

I went to TMM many times back in the mid-1990s when they printed out vacant apartment for leases, etc. Never needed an appointment.
I cannot imagine they would turn you away, as most people use their services online and not in-person.

Would be interested in knowing how they’ve stayed/changed, etc. They provided an invaluable service back in the mid-1990s when there was no 591 or other websites to look for apartments, especially for foreigners who could not read apartment for rent notices in Chinese on neighborhood billboards.
