You should be able to pick up one at B&Q or any appliance store, but unless you never ever plan to open your windows, I wonder about the usefullness. You’ve be better off just strapping on an O2 tank and mask. That’s why I like to SCUBA dive…get some fresh air.

Why? They clean the air in an entire room in under an hour I believe. Who keeps the windows open all the time here? is more the question I would ask you. I leave the windows open during the day when I am not here and then close them on flip on the air filters when I get home. The filters (I use Honeywell) make a huge difference in the air quality. Also keeps the dust and cat hair down tremendously.

And yes, B&Q carry them as do many department stores.

They also have several different Honeywell models in Costco.

I’m a big believer in them: my eldest son was always coughing - especially overnight - until we got a purifier for his room (basically running overnight while he slept). He stopped coughing almost the same day we started using it :bravo:

I have seven air cleaners, of various shapes and sizes. They are wonderful. It’s amazing the gunk in the air inside ones bedroom. Honeywell make a few good products. Look for when they go on sale, sometimes you can save almost 1000 NtD or so @ B&Q and the big hypermarkets…

P.s. Buy the good pre-filters, not the cheaper non-honeywell type. The honeywell ones cost more, but they last longer due to an obvious higher quality.

MM, you’re right. I’m just bitching about the dust that accumulates so quickly in the house.

We also have a honeywell.

How much are the good Honeywell Air Purifiers in Costco or BQ ?

Should I buy one in the states and bring or are the prices just the same about ? Thanks

I have two of Honeywell’s 17200 model. While not top of line, they work very well. I think at B & Q they run about equal to $175 US. The next model up, which is a little taller and a little wider, ( i forget the model #) is around $250 US. The black carbon prefilter are about $15 US, while the round HEPA filter are about $70 US.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone tried the EcoQuest Air Filter? I heard it is pretty amazing but also really expensive. I’d like to have some opinions before invesing in one.

You’ll find some interesting opinions when searching the web for “Ecoquest scam”.

If you’re looking for something more sophisticated (and expensive) than the Honeywell air filters, I highly recommend Sharp’s air purifiers which use Plasmacluster technology in addition to HEPA and active carbon filters. They’re available in Taiwan, too.

Yes, I would avoid Ecoquest or at least research the company thoroughly before buying one of their “air purifiers”.

I’m tempted by a Honeywell. But it bothers me that in B&Q there seem to be more different models of air cleaner than there are replacement filters. I worry that after a year or so I’d need to replace the main filter but I wouldn’t be able to get one.

The Honeywells are around the 5-8000NT mark. B&Q also sell other makes including one for around 10,000 that doesn’t require replacement filters. It is a tall, thin one – not sure of the brand. It looks nice but 10,000 is a fair bit of money.

I wasted something over NT$10,500 on an Electrolux “Active Carbon Air Cleaner” last year. The first day I used it, I could soon detect a marked improvement in the air quality and thought it was wonderful. But it seemed to quickly lose its effectiveness, and then, within just a couple of weeks of purchase, it conked out. It took several phone calls and a couple of weeks before I could get it repaired, and now I hardly ever bother to use it because it really doesn’t seem to make any discernible difference. What’s more, the carbon filters need to be changed quite regularly, and are bloody expensive at something like NT$600-800 each (I can’t recall exactly how much except that they were more expensive than the filters for any of the other air purifiers in Carrefours, where I bought it). I very much regret not having bought a Honeywell instead, or even a couple of them for the price of my Electrolux. I bought it because it was the largest of the air cleaners in the store and I trusted the brand name.

Do any air conditioners have air cleaning units built in? Obviously I wouldn’t expect there to be something of Honeywell quality but I hope at least there might be something a bit better than the usual very basic air con filter.

I have to buy a new air conditioner and I want to get an air cleaner too. Hoping I can get a combined unit.

Do any of the Honeywell models come with a filter that can be cleaned by the user or do all models require regular purchases of new filters?

Most Western air purifiers have filters that need to be periodically replaced…I’ve heard that this configuration is more effective…

Then there is that fancy Sharp Plasma thing…they say the filter can be washed…I do not know the effectiveness of them though…they seem to be the “hot” thing in air purifiers now…they are expensive though…but maybe the fact that the filters only need to replaced every 5 or so years can offset the initial cost…I do not know…never used one before…

Thanks to everyone here to posted information about the Honeywell air purifiers. After a nasty bought of bronchitis and another chest cold on top of that I decided to take the plunge and buy one. I live near a highway and get a steady flow of car exhaust blowing into my apartment and figured that was contributing to it.

I bought the Honeywell model# 17005 at Costco for about NT$3600 and a box of replacement filters (2) for about NT$500. I really feel I’m breathing easier now and have been very happy with its performance so far. I checked at B&Q but they only had much larger and more expensive models. I live in a small apartment so this was plenty enough size for me.

Re: the filters, the unit comes with a replacement filter though I wasn’t sure so I bought a box just in case. They recommend changing them every three months or so and the unit has a measurement display to gauge how dirty it is. The larger HEPA filters should be changed every 2-3 years according to the directions.

Yes, that’s right. One box of crabon filters should last for two changes so the cost is maybe NT100 a month. (That also answers seeker4’s question). The big filter costs a few thousand but gets replaced every two years.

BTW, there should be buttons on the machine to indicate when each filters needs to be changed.

As a side note, my company recently bought honeywell’s for every rooms in the office. The difference is amazing. We all used to get dry, itchy eyes, and I used to wipe off a far amount of dust off my desk every day. Now, my eyes are fine, and here is almost no dust on my desk when I arrive in the morning. Huge difference.

If you live near a busy road, you might want to replace the filters every two months.

I have a Honeywell filter and it definitely reduces the dust. It also creates some great white noise if you’re having a lie-in on a Saturday morning after, say, having drunk yourself into a blinding stupor in Carnegie’s the night before. It also has remote control so you can adjust the noise levels from the comfort of the floor or wherever you happen to land.

There is a big round thing inside which you change once every 2-3 years or something and it has an activated charcoal filter wrapped around it which you change about every couple of months. You can tell how much crap it is sucking out of the air by how disgustingly bogging the carbon filter gets.

Do they have machines for filtering the crap out of your blood? That’ll be the next purchase.

Someone mentioned opening the windows. I did that once in 2003 and it was awful. There were all these really horrible grey buildings inside and it was really hot and smelly. Not doing that again.

Which model?

Yes … here.

The models don’t matter, they have the same working parts. They are just different sizes for different size rooms. They say on the box what size room they are suited to.
