Good - but not awesome - things in Taiwan - a thread

This place can often lean negative and cynical (I admit my part in this lol), so I have made this thread to be the positive counterpart to the “Wack things in Taiwan” thread. It seems there is no other thread like this one…apologies if I missed it.

I was just about to cross an unprotected crosswalk on the way to breakfast this morning, and a hatchback almost right-turned into the path I was just about to go down. It wasn’t really a close call at all, but the driver could tell I was startled. He rolled down his window and sincerely said “bao qian” (sorry) to my wife and I.

Anecdotally, I haven’t experienced such an apology on the road here until this morning. It was really refreshing.

For a “good things in Taiwan” thread, that’s kinda a weak start

I agree. OP maybe second try?

Admittedly true. However, it is a start!

So that’s it? Nothing else? Jesus^^ You really must love Taiwan XD

I know most taiwanese are apologetic if walking, if they run into you because they’re too busy watching TikTok while walking.

A pool in every district in Taipei. I’m going to go to one soon. If somebody nearly runs me over on the way, I hope I get a pai-say.

If I one day I open my eyes in hospital and feel lots of pain^^ I hope, I get a “sorry” from someone^^

There is!

That’s awesome things, though. This thread is just good things, like someone saying sorry.

Conclusion so far^^

Does 謝謝 count, or maybe 歡迎光臨?

  • very accommodating to people who speak mandarin badly
  • punctual and clean public transport
  • ancestor worship is very wholesome
  • very affordable (at least by the standards of where I live now)
  • low percentage of crazy people
  • a lot of people providing a lot of services who want to do business

Exactly. Please only report experiences on the ‘good’ or ‘slightly to moderately refreshing’ scale here. Keep that dramatic ‘awesome’ category stuff in that thread, please and thank you.

Sunrise in Dulan Taidong is pretty awesome, sorry I should say good.

The packages I have ordered off of Amazon are stuck in customs, and the customs broker continues to have a busy line.

But hey! My almost $100 USD of products have at least made it to Taipei. I can work with that :upside_down_face:

And sunsets before a typhoon.

Exactly. This sentence/picture completely captures the ethos I want for this thread lol. Extracting a positive from an already negative, or soon to be negative, situation. :relieved:

So can’t mention the food? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I would say something like 滷肉飯 (lu rou fan) would be apt for this thread. Almost never AWESOME, but some places provide a varying quality of ‘good’. Really a good “eat to live” food that is also cheap imo.
