Good Walking Shoes for Men

I find myself in need of a decent pair of walking shoes that don’t look as ridiculous as my Crocs, but are just as comfortable. I have a pair of Merrell sandals that I’m happy with, but none of their regular shoes are available in my size. I went to New Balance tonight, but their shoes didn’t fit me very well. Plus, most of them were a tad on the colourful side for my tastes.

I don’t need anything formal–runners/trainers would be fine. However, they have to be uber comfortable and breathe well. I’ll check out the other major athletic brands, but I’m wondering if I may be overlooking something somewhere. Suggestions?

I have been wearing ASICS ever since high school and they have not done me any wrong.

However, before we go into that, I have to ask what kind of walking shoes are you looking for? Nowadays running/walking shoes (in my perspective) are put into two categories, for the sake of argument, I will call them, cushioned and light/non-cushioned.

The cushioned shoes are going to be a little heavier, but have a thick sole and plenty of support. Like below:

Whereas the light non-cushioned are feather light and tend to have a more “sponge-y” sole and make it seem like you are walking/running barefoot. These are going to be similar to your crocs with regards to feel.

I have a pair of both of the styles, however, I use them for different activities. The cushioned shoes I use them for running or if I know I will be doing a lot of walking. The non-cushioned I wear on short walks to the 7-11 or car rides since they don’t give me as much support as I need.

As for your color options, it’s going to be pretty tough nowadays to find a pair of running/walking shoes that are not flashy.

At the end of the day, it will completely depend on what you prefer and whatever feels comfortable.

Not really atletic, but casual: try SCONA, a local brand.

Mizuno carries W -wide- sizes, which are usually more comfortable to the Western foot.

There is another European brand available here that makes very nice walking shoes, but gotta get home to check the name.

EDIT:
KEEN. Nicer and more comfortable than Crocs. Plz.

I need to be able to walk for hours on end through department stores, shopping with my wife. Crocs are amazing for this.

Maybe stick with Crocs? I personally would never put on a pair of those and have never worn them, but I heard they are super comfortable.

If you are wearing the traditional Crocs, why not try the loafers or boat shoe styled Crocs? I’m sure they are just as comfortable and not very flashy either.

I need shoes I can wear with socks, something I can’t do with Crocs.

Further to your first post: I tried on some spongy-soled New Balance shoes last weekend. I think it may have been the way I walk, but I felt my ankles really angled inwards when I walked around the store in them. I’ll give ASICS a try.

I think New Balance also has W sizes.

Where do you live so I can recommend a SCONA store nearby?

I live in Taichung, East District. But I worry SCONA shoes may look too formal, and I’m looking for something that breathes very well. Still, I’ll give them a try if there’s a store nearby.

They have both formals and non formals, even sandals. They are a lot better quality and build than Dr.We’d or Aso and La New that advertise themselves as “walking” shoes. I have found many local brands atrocious and with pernicious consequences to your knees. But SCONA is like walking in butter. That luscious.

Based on their website, their shoes look very nice, and their prices seem reasonable. There’s one pair that looks semi-breathable. Which ones do you have?
