Google Earth

Finally! Most of urban areas in hi-res.

maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=xxx&ll= … &t=k&hl=en

naked rooftop sunbathers will never be safe again

I’ve been riveted to that map since Poagao put me on to it. click and drag for a breathtaking trip around the world. Too cool!

Typical. My place of imprisonment (work) is there is high res, where I live and play are not. :raspberry:

I’ve already found the pyramids and Bill Gate’s house. Taipei 101 is not visible, unfortunately. Hong Kong is pretty cool looking…

Wow, Sandman, cool, you could do anything, if Google can’t see you nobody can.

So much for my breathtaking trip, Taichung, Stuttgart, Taipei and Stuttgart is low resolution so I didn’t stay very long.

Gonna go to France tomorrow!

If you look really closely you can see down Loretta’s top and…

I can see my house from here ! :rainbow:

I can see my house, the houses I grew up in, houses of friends, the schools I went to and the boot camp I went through from here.

Google maps + Flickr w/ notes = teh coolness.

Click on the link rice, at the bottom in the centre is the footbridge over Taizhong Kang Rd. Your place you can find by following the road at that intersection.

That site is boody fantastic!!!

I can’t wait to sit down with the map book and explore every square inch of Taipei. Mmmm.

Great…so much for any productivity for the next day or two.

But seriously, thanks for the link! I’ll be glued to this site for hours, and my wife will continue give me the :unamused: eyes.

If you goto earth.google.com/ and download the program. It will give you an amazing ability to use global positioning, and will give you a key list you can add to the map ranging from airports to golf courses.

Hmmmm, too bad, it seems the entire eastern half of Taipei is not in Hi-res.

you have to admit though the high-res is damn nice when you can focus in to car level. I focused in so close, for Michigan that I roomed in and actually got a picture of my parents house, and I could see their car in the driveway. Think it was at 584 ft give or take.

Yes, high-res is great! I found my house and I can also see some people around here have swimming pools (couldn’t see that from the street). First I thought maybe I should knock on their doors and ask if we can be friends.

Realizing this might be a bit strange (I’m not in Taiwan, after all), I started to scan the area for lakes which might be appropriate for swimming (did I mention it is currently very hot here?). To my surprise, I found a huge lake not too far away from my home [click here, centre of the map]. Well, OK, I haven’t been living here for so long, so it wasn’t entirely implausible that there was a lake nearby I had never heard of. It looked nice and blue, partially embedded in a forest, so I considered driving there on the weekend. Since Google can’t show useful maps for Europe yet, I used another website to figure out how to get there. However, I wasn’t able to see the lake on the maps this other website was showing. I checked and double-checked and all I could find was a large industrial area where the lake should be. Having a closer look, it said “Industrial Area (EDF)”. EDF like in

you can see the power plant in the satellite photo. It is the billowy cloud like cover to the left of the lake. The lake is probably there, but if it is next to a power plant… It’s not the first place you’d want to go for a dip.

If you dragged your girlfriend, she probably would have a right to kick your ass, but it’d still be funny.

Is that the Tong-Hai section of Taizhong KAng Rd.???

If so where is the metropolitan park??

Cheers!

Daryl

sorry… found it… duuuuhhhhh :bravo:

Cheers!

D’oh!
You’re right. The cooling towers are so easy to spot, actually. The heat must have affected my brain. I still don’t understand why that other map website wouldn’t show me the lake, though (well, maybe it’s to prevent people from driving there).

I’d say “Hey, isn’t it just like Kenting!”

Taking Google Maps one step further.

earth.google.com/
Google Earth’s true special sauce is the way it allows users to create markers for just about any venue or location, write a note describing it and then share it with the application’s entire user base.

“The goal with Google Earth is to create a kind of browser for the planet,” said John Hanke, general manager of the Google Keyhole group, which developed the application. "
Taiwan is listed in the coverage area. I have not had a chance to play with the software yet - the browser is free and then you can pay for more bells and whistles.

Could add a new dimension to the “Where can I find . . . ?” forum.
