Google Voice showing up in my Gmail

It’s strange, but when I go to voice.google.com, I get this message:

I’m in Taiwan, and I’m assuming that most everyone else here is too. Are the rest of you seeing this message?

regards,
DB

I am in Taiwan. I used to get that above message, but now get the log in page.

How did you get a number and kept it from Taiwan? I ask you because the number I got in March, they somehow assigned again to someone else …

I get the same.

I got my number while still in the US. I still have it, I still use it.

Before this international roll-out, if I was not yet logged into my Gmail account, I got the same error message you mentioned. However, if I logged into my Gmail account first, the Voice page opened normally. The little phone in the Gmail page, though, did not show up until the other day.

With this International roll-out, you may not be able to sign-up for a US number if you are outside the US. You’d have to do some more research.

That’s ODD. I just logged out of my Gmail and then went directly to the Voice page. I got the login page.

Same thing happened when I opened a different browser. I usually work in Firefox, so to test it out I opened Chrome. No problem.

My Google Apps email account (that runs my website / business email) has the green phone icon and the number keypad appears when I click on it. I can add credit but can’t get a number. It only seems to allow me to add credit if I’m not signed into my regular Gmail. My regular Gmail [strike]doesn’t have Voice at all[/strike] EDIT has it but doesn’t allow credit to be added.

I added credit in March … twice … I can call out to any phone anywhere in the world, tried it and it works … but no call in number as you need have a US address.

I’ve been using the crap out of this free Google voice tonight since I forgot to charge my cordless phone at the house and I needed to make several calls to the US for work. I think the call quality is just as good as the 002 calling with the phone company, too. Thanks CraigTPE for letting us know about this great feature.

I’m sure glad that I got my Google Voice account set up when I was in the US. I had no idea it would also work here without having to jump through so many hoops like setting up SIP.

If you have a smart phone, you don’t need to set up any SIP workaround by using Talkatone on iPhone or GrooVe IP on Android. Before those apps came out, I had a SIP set up using SipGate and SipSorcery, but kind of a PITA.

I was lucky enough to get it while I was still in the US, so I got the whole package, including a US phone number for people to use to call me. It’s still only an alternative to MagicJack for when I’m out and using my Android or at home and just can’t be bothered to fire-up the computer. I’ve heard that GV doesn’t always work to rural areas, due to some local phone companies not wanting to connect their calls (I dunno). All I know is that it works fine for me on all my family calls except to northern Georgia. Using GV, I can hear them, but they can’t hear me. I don’t have this problem with any other place I usually call with GV, or at all with MagicJack.

Anyway, it’s a useful tool!

Thanks for the heads-up on GrooVe IP. It is a lot more convenient than having to go through SipGate then Google Voice. For some reason I could never get SipGate to work with any VoIP app other than Fring. Apps like Sipdroid and CSipSimple would register fine on SipGate but I can never make outgoing calls. Incoming calls will receive fine on CSipSimple, but not Sipdroid. Now if only I could figure out a way to use up the rest of the US$15 credit I have in my SipGate account…

Although I still don’t quite understand how GrooVe IP works. Am I still able to chat with others on Google Talk when GrooVe IP is running?

In the past, GrooVe IP said that if you were logged in to Google Chat on your computer, it might affect incoming calls. I seldom get incoming calls, so I haven’t had any issue. The developer has been very proactive and aggressive about updating the app, so maybe that is no longer a problem.

Google Voice has been crashing and burning lately in NY

Sucks since its my only voice service.

Just curious what the specific issues are.

The only problem I’ve had with it is when I call the rural area where my grand parents live. I’ve heard some rural area phone operators aren’t playing nice with GV. Other than that, no problems whatsoever.

Dropped calls, volume so low you can’t hear the other person.
My network is supposedly 4G but everyone I speak to complains they cant understand cause I keep “breaking up”, people I’m speaking to break up. Yet internet is running fine.
Just overall poor quality.

So you are using a cell phone to connect? Which app? Is it a GV issue, the cell phone data provider or the app?

No, just Google Voice straight from my email browser.

Verizon doesn’t give gsm phones (hardly ever) so when I ended my contract, connected GVoice through my prepaid for a while but then just got rid of the phone and have been using just GVoice on my computer.

Then I don’t understand what you mean by your network supposedly being 4G. I thought that was a cell phone technology…
