Robert Prevost has been elected the new pope
Prevost has taken the name Pope Leo
[!memo] From AI
Historically, popes choose their regnal names to honor a predecessor, signal their intended mission, or reflect personal devotion. The name Leo has been used by thirteen popes before Leo XIV, with two of the most notable being Pope Leo I (Leo the Great, 440–461) and Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903). Pope Leo I is celebrated for his theological contributions, such as the Tome of Leo, which was pivotal in defining Christological doctrine at the Council of Chalcedon, and for his diplomatic efforts, like negotiating with Attila the Hun to spare Rome. Pope Leo XIII is known for his social teachings, particularly the encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed labor rights and social justice, marking the Church’s engagement with the modern industrial world.Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, likely chose the name Leo to align with these legacies, given his background and priorities. Prevost, a Chicago-born prelate, has been closely aligned with Pope Francis’ vision, emphasizing outreach to the poor, environmental care, and synodality—making the Church more inclusive and participatory. His tenure as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and his role in various Vatican dicasteries indicate a focus on administrative reform and pastoral leadership. Choosing the name Leo could signal his intent to emulate Leo I’s focus on doctrinal clarity and unity, especially in a polarized Church, or Leo XIII’s commitment to addressing contemporary social issues, such as poverty and migration, which Prevost has supported.
Additionally, Prevost’s background as a missionary in Peru and his leadership in the Augustinian order might reflect a personal connection to the name Leo, possibly through St. Augustine’s influence (since Leo I also drew on Augustinian theology). The choice of Leo XIV could also be a nod to the need for strong leadership in a time of global challenges, much like Leo I’s era of barbarian invasions or Leo XIII’s navigation of modernity.
Great to have an American pope!
He’s supposed to be progressive like Francis, so don’t get too disappointed ![]()
Some disagree.

He is anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, pro-open Borders, and a total Marxist like Pope Francis. Catholics don’t have anything good to look forward to. Just another Marxist puppet in the Vatican.”
“Meet the new American Pope. Of course he’s anti-MAGA and WOKE. Another Open Borders Pope. Gross,” she also posted.(https://x.com/LauraLoomer/status/1920533867141677173)
Made in USA. Smart way for Vatican to avoid Trump’s tariffs. /s
It’s odd listening to people speculate whether or not the new pope is going to play God and abandon the bedrock beliefs of the Catholic Church as if that wouldn’t undermine the very premise for its existence.
There is nothing “Biblical” in the Bible about the Pope located in Rome (or Constantinople, for that matter). This was one of the reasons the Reformation happened.
