Interesting Canadian and Taiwan angle: A lone security guard at the Taiwanese embassy in Haiti was responsible for the arrests of 11 suspects in the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, after a group of heavily armed commandos invaded the diplomatic compound the evening following the murder. The new details help shed light on the chaotic aftermath of Mr. Moïse’s murder. And they come as authorities release more information on the suspects, including a former security guard for the Canadian embassy in Port-au-Prince who reportedly told investigators that he found the hit job on the internet.
While I’d normally dismiss this as just standard-issue third-world mayhem, the story just keeps getting weirder and weirder. I hope someone eventually finds out WTF this was all about.
The Canuckistan embassy needs to vet its security guards (know he is a former guard but will be interesting to see what surfaces) better while Taiwan, oddly enough, seems to have chosen well.
Again, covered in NY Times because the Stasi CBC won’t cover such articles. We saw that more than a decade ago. When Haitian-Canadian Michelle Jean was appointed Governor General, we saw Liberals of all colors commending Canada’s multiculturalism policies, and we also saw the media incorrectly portray her as a victim…As someone who escaped Papa Doc’s brutal regime with only the shirt on her back In fact, her family too was part of Haiti’s elite.
Haiti, China etc.-- Canada is a dumping ground for money laundering from Chicom or third world elites.
I’m genuinely surprised that the Haitian police managed to catch them, particularly if these guys have combat and/or asymmetric-warfare experience. People who work as mercenaries are usually pretty good at what they do. The police are either more competent than anybody would expect, or their capture is all just part of the operation.
True enough, I guess. I suppose it’s a case of caveat emptor; if you’re an oaf yourself (cf. Mark Thatcher) then you might well end up hiring a bunch of oafs.
Broadly speaking, though, “private security” types have genuine credentials and are good at their job. Reason being, you’d have to be a complete f’ing idiot (not merely an oaf) to put your life on the line just for a few thousand $ a month. Mercenarying is well paid, but not well-paid enough to take unreasonable risks.
Having said all that, Bob Denard was an oaf extraordinaire and somehow got away with it time and time again.
I can’t help wondering if no-hopers were hired precisely because they’d be captured and would spill the (completely made-up) beans. Perhaps their families had been promised a massive payoff. Given the story so far, there’s room for all sorts of mad conspiracy theories.
I think they’ve improved there days from the old-time mercs, with the influx of former East Bloc types, and better trained South Americans- ironically first by the Americans, then by the drug trades
The fact that they were Colombians rather than, say, veterans of the wars involving Croatia/Bosnia/Kosovo might help point to the culprit. Or … maybe it’s just a smokescreen to keep people second-guessing
You don’t assassinate presidents without making really sure of covering your tracks.
I wonder if he (or someone else if this is BS) expected there to be a larger coup. The attack would make more sense as part of one, not least to the mercenaries involved. Or someone sold it to the mercenaries that way.
Certainly the mercs might have been lied to and/or set up. Wouldn’t be the first time.
But yeah, you do have to wonder: what was the point? All that’s going to happen now is that Haiti will get another crappy president (presumably after squabbling for a while). Unless you were intending to go the whole hog - literally mount a coup and replace the entire government - why even bother? And what does Haiti have that’s worth the trouble?
As things are looking at the moment, the only possible motive would be to send a warning to any future president that he’d better toe the line. Whatever that line is. And whoever the line belongs to.
I suppose it could be an individual issue- the president as one guy holding up a deal- there’s some talk of a mysterious Chinese businessman involved
. The thing that makes me wonder, going back to tempogain;s point, is the number involved. Way more than for an assassination, but apparently not enough for a successful coup- were they counting on an uprising, simulated or otherwise. Have to see who emerges on top- don’t know anything about the local politics.
