Halp! I broke my internet and don't speak Chinese!

Ok I’ll preface this by saying that my internet is actually broken and that I’m writing this from a computer cafe.

This is one question that I could get answered that would be very useful: Is there only one ISP in the Taipei area? THis seems too much to hope for, but you never know. If so, what is their phone number? Is there an English-speaking option? If so, I can attempt again to fix it if I have that stuff.

Also, there are specifics that I could have if I spoke Chinese. I don’t. They’ll be listed below, but honestly, if I had the information/spoke Chinese/was able to make understood what I need then I might be able to straighten this out. But I don’t.

Ok, here we go:

How I Broke It:
Installing a game. It asked if I wanted to hook it up to the internet and I said no. After that, I was unable to use the internet.

What My Computer Says Is Wrong and Weird Stuff Happening:
I need a service name for it.
-I am unable to get this information. I don’t know the ISP my building uses or its phone number. I am not able to make myself understood to the landlord, landlady, or their daughter. The daughter speaks a little English, and I don’t speak any Chinese :frowning:

My computer says that the internet connection is there, but it won’t connect to it.
-It won’t connect to the cable that goes into the wall (sorry, not sure what kind I have).
-It’s been trying to ‘dial’ sometimes when it finds out there is no internet. It has never done this before when I’ve had internet issues of this kind (when I was first setting up in an apt and needed this kind of information)

Specifics that I Do Know About My Computer:
-I’m using 64bit Vista.
Um. I’m sure I know other things, but what is necessary for this aside from the OS I’m not sure of…

What I’m Hoping For:
Can someone give me the service name? Sure there are a couple of different providers but I figure if I try them all something’s bound to work :smiley:
If that doesn’t work…
Someone who can speak Chinese. I dont know anyone yet. I figure $900/hr?

No, there’s not only one Internet provider here :slight_smile: And I’m afraid you have provided very little information to even guess what might be the problem. Are you using ADSL probably? Some of those PPPoE ones? (with name and a password?) Did the landlord/landlady provide some of those instructions (probably in Chinese) how to set it up? Is your operating system (or the Internet connection) in Chinese, or does it say anything – some warning, message, or all else as before?

Well, I “do computers” (not that I will for sure be able to fix it up out of the box though), speak some Chinese, live in Taipei and even might have time to go help you tonight, so let me know if you’re desperate :wink:

Where do you live? May be we can help you directly.

It doesn’t seems to be important. You just “broke” you internet by installing a game. It should be easy to fix.
As Yankyo said, what is you ISP? ADSL? Do you use PPPoE to connect (Enter a username+password) ?

May be you just need to reconfigure the login and pass.

“halp” ? At least its a start in getting local on the wan :slight_smile: Get whoever installed it to reinstall for you. Shouldnt be much of a problem.

Ok. I don’t know what a PPoE is, but when I try to connect I can choose a broadband thing which says connect to a PPoE network. Yay! I’ve identified something.

So, only issue with that is that I don’t have a name or passowr - but, note note note I have never needed one before. But when I go to properties, it wants the Service Name and I think I might be golden if I had that. I’ve had a problem in the past which reminds me of this, namely, I needed something that needed to be updated when I got a new modem. I think this might be the same variety of issue which is just now surfacing because I guess the game decided to renew/reset a connection? Sheer speculation here.

My OS is in English. I don’t get a warning, but I get suggestions as to what is wrong (it suggests no connection to the internet and/or no service name value which, indeed, upon looking at it is blank).

Regarding installing, this is a do-it-myself-brilliant-idea kind of thing. I’ve uninstalled with the yes for internet options, and no go. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling this time with a yes, and still no go :frowning:

I didn’t get any information on how to set it up or anything like that. When I moved in, I could plug it in and it would work. I don’t think it’s the kind of thing that could be in a lease? Are they written to contain some of that information? It’s in Chinese.

As I have a little more information than I did last night (As in: I know, theoretically, how to ask for the name of the ISP and I think I even have a way to get a phone number! Hope springs eternal!) I’ll see if I can get that information.

Call the phone company. They have a 24 hour English service dept. They can talk you thru most any problem.
