Hand cranked mixer for baking

I’m looking for one of those hand cranked mixers to make a souffle or other egg white creations with my kids. Want those peaks! Don’t do it that often and I hate to spend around 1K for an electric mixer.

Has anyone tried to get those peaks with a normal whisk? Anyway what I want looks like the photo below. Give me the Chinese name if you can.

PS: Never made a souffle or a meringue before so I don’t know what I’m getting into. The twin girls are calling their older sis “souffle girl” after television character who could not get it right. Seems fun to try. Certainly better than emulating Miley Cyrus. Told them Hannah Montana went to a mental institution.

Hi, that’s called an egg beater. I’ve not seen any here, there are none listed on PChomeshopping AFAIK, and the ones back home aren’t made like they used to be. They often have plastic gears now. You’d have to order one and have it sent here, and that’s not cheap. Here’s a decent-looking but inexpensive one on Amazon. I might get one when in the US. It will be fun for the kids to use, so consider buying the Norpro and shipping it here.

Your other options are:

  1. a manual whisk da3dan4qi4 打蛋器, since you don’t do it that often. Requires a few minutes of vigorous effort by a healthy adult, and will leave your arm very tired but you’ll be healthier. Safest for kids, but not easy. You can take turns with the kids but anyone under 8-10 probably will find it hard. Then again, taking turns is fun. Cheapest, and easy to find here at DIY baking shops. But you might find the effort too much, depending on your strength level and/or laziness (not being snarky – it’s quite a bit of work to whisk by hand to a firm peak stage).

  2. A stick blender (another here), 手持式攪拌棒 about $2900 NTD during frequent sales at dept. store kitchen areas, iUse, etc… Easy to find here (I recommend Cuisinart), very quick and VERY easy to use, small and easy to store even in the small kitchens here. Recommended as the best of all these alternatives, since the Norpro at top and shipping will already be at least half this cost, and you can do so much more with this.

In addition to a whisk attachment (ok for kids age 6+) I recommend you get one with an immersion blender (NOT ok for kids, but you can pop it down into soup or sauce to puree it, instead of messing up a blender), and a mini chopper bowl with blade (Ok for kids with very close supervision, but you handle the blade when assembling and cleaning, not them; VERY useful for making pesto, applesauce and hummus, or for pureeing a marinade, for instance. I used the whisk attachment on the stick blender just this morning to make waffles. LOVE it. If you think you’ll make pesto, hummus, etc., the Cuisinart will be well worth the bucks. I wouldn’t trust a cheaper one, an Electrolux or some off brand, personally.

The other options are a hand-held elecric mixer 勳風攪拌機, rare here but here’s one pretty cheap online; ok for older kids only; or the whisk attachment on a food processor or stand mixer, e.g. a KitchenAid (around NT$15,000).
