Handlebar mounted motorcycle camera

I’m thinking of getting a camera to mount on my handlebars, given the insanity of the local driving. I know nothing about this topic and tried searching the forum for ‘go pro’ to see what was already posted, but got error 502 three times (once after restarting my browser).

I don’t want to install something to the actual bike, and I’d rather pay a bit more for better quality video.

Question 1: Where in Kaohsiung can I go shopping for such a thing? I’ve been looking around various places and have seen absolutely nothing, and yet I see people with cameras mounted on their helmets and bikes. Is everyone buying these things online?

Question 2: Does anyone have personal experience with such a camera, and could they recommend or not? Doesn’t have to be Go Pro, something Taiwanese is great if it is quality.

try “gopro” in one word ^^

All electronic shops like K3C (the yellow 3C) should have some action cams or even dedicated dashcams.

I’m currently using an self-imported gopro session (small cube) for my scooter. Good image quality and Ok stabilization, but not really convenient because not designed as a dashcam:

  • No automatic overwrite of old recordings
  • No option to add timestamp during recording
  • Limited battery life
  • I have huge problems with the gopro software

Before that, I was using a cheap gopro hero knockoff from the “brand” SJCAM. Was much more convenient, but bad image quality (blooming lights at night, baf stabilization = all vibrations and bumps shake the picture extremely). After a year or so the battery inflated, crushing the camera insides.

I had great experience though with a dedicated MIO MiVue dashcam (front and back) that I bought for our company’s car. OK image quality, very convenient everyday use.

If I was to select a new camera for a motorcycle, I would get a fixed installed front and rear camera from MIO, like these.

Funny, I’ve been looking (including a yellow 3C) but haven’t seen anything. Might have to try asking!

I haven’t decided to keep my little scooter past the 1-year white-plate probation. Might upgrade to something a little more powerful…

GoPro ripoffs might work just as fine. There are others with more aerodynamic shapes but not sure if that’s really important.

You just leave the mount on the handlebar, no need to leave the camera there.

Then there are sets of front and rear cameras… Might want that actually.

The bike itself wasn’t very expensive, this seems like too much of an upgrade for a second-hand scooter…

oh yeah, results!

Hmm… yep ask, and/or or look for the MIO packaging. They all seem to look similar to this:

(damn I can’t upload?)

I’m not sure where else I saw those, but I guess also big scooter/car accessory or repair shops might have some.

does anyone know any of these in Kaohsiung?

I see it more as protecting myself than my scooter (or rather: insuring against wrong claims, or know who to sue if I get hit) . How much we value ourselves is debatable, though.

How much do the front/rear setups cost?

Also, if possible, where can I go in K-town to enquire about such things? As a general rule I like to do things myself and a handlebar camera I know is within my skill set…

Looks like 4K NTD and up for that one brand that I have a tiny bit of experience with: 機車系列 - 行車記錄器 - Mio EZ 購

Chain stores - Right, carrefour carries such stuff! 連鎖店 - Mio

really!?

Yup. Same shop area as they sell phones, shavers and other small electronics. Mostly some kind of extra stall with stuff behind glass. Near the TVs and stuff. The bigger the carrefour, the better.

if you’re gonna have an accident, better to do it before you get the expensive bike.
