Has anyone ever opened a business in Taiwan? I need some tips

I am thinking seriously to open a business for the first time. I am tired to work for others. I am thinking about a breakfast store. I did a research about the Breakfast franchises in Taiwan. But, the minimum to start is 3,000,000 NT and there are other fees like the construction, empolyees’ wages, etc. Has anyone ever opened a breakfast store? What was the start budget? I don’t live in Taipei. I live in South. I am planning to create my own menu. I will include on the menu Fresh chicken salad sandwiches, ham and cheese toasts, quiches, meat puff pie, paninis, coffee, tea, etc. I plan to open a small store. Which location is the best to open this business? Does anyone have any idea how much would it cost to start? I want to take a risk. In case, it doesn’t work. I won’t lose tons of money.

Best location, maybe near any school or MRT station, not too close to any convenience store.

Have you talked to any breakfast store owners?

Go to another town, see where the busiest ones are located, talk to the owners after they’re done for the day.

(Busy stores will have different challenges.)

No MRT in Kao City (it is called Metro) and I few few breakfast shops at or near a Metro station which tend be more busy later.

Have you thought about a food truck operation?

If you have an APRC, it is much easier to open a business. Having your own business is extremely stressful because everything falls on you.
If you need to hire yourself with the work permit, it is so hard to meet the minimum gross revenue.
If I was opening a shop, I’d wait for the APRC znd open work rights.

Sounds good. If Kaohsiung You’d want to be in a central area where better off locals and tourists and visitors will be. For what you want to do you don’t need to be a franchisee, you don’t need to compete directly with other Taiwanese breakfast stores. You would have to do lunch we well obviously.

There is.was food truck boss posting here

A nice mince pie would be good, but it’s not for a breakfast shop.

I dont think it matters too much.

My area has a million breakfast shops. Theres one street with 4 all next to each other. They are popular.

Isnt it easier to open a small cart or night market stall first?

Good idea! Not too close to the convenience stores. But, there are many convenience stores next to the schools and MRT station.

They won’t give a lot of information. They will be rude if you insist. Obviously, they fear I could be their competitors.

I thought about it. The problem is where I am gonna park the truck. Because I am a homeowner and I live in a building, not a house.

I have Taiwanese citizenship. But, I wasn’t raised in Taiwan. My experience in Taiwan is just like a Foreigner living in Taiwan for many years. But, I have the citizenship. All the documents are fine. I am just a little bit unsure about opening a business in Taiwan for the first time. I am worried about the loss.

I thought about it. But, I am curious about how much should a vendor invest on these stalls? Most people work alone in those stalls. I have fear if it gets busy, I won’t be able to handle by myself. Sometimes, I need someone to watch for me. So, I can go to the restroom. It is ok to hire someone to work with me. But, I don’t know if those stalls make enough to pay for the rent, expense and employee’s wages.

You need to be licensed to sell food from a truck stand. If not you will be fined.

Of course you can hire someone to work with you. Seems you need to do far more research on opening a your business. You quoted 3 million investment as a requirement. This is not so you can do so for far less.

By the way, I was thinking to open a small food truck next to a University. Not truck. Maybe a van. So, I can sell to go meals in the beginning. I just don’t know about the policies to open it. Where should I contact to get the permit to open a food truck?

Does your apartment come with a parking space? If not, are there spaces available that you can rent?

Yes, there are parking spaces. But, they are not big enough to park a truck. It is in the basement floor. I may find a space to rent to park a van. I was thinking if there is a possibility to park a van in front of a University to sell to go breakfast meal. Just to see if it works. But, I need to know the policies and permit to open a business in this location. I don’t know where I should contact to get this info.

You can probably approach the University general affairs office to ask if they can give you permission to park a food truck there.

This other info comes from ChatGPT, so you may want to double-check it:
