He was single handedly the biggest asshole I ever met running a restaurant . .I had exactly the same sentiments. I have no sympathy whatsoever he was a really unpleasant individual.
Nobody ever asks people what else do you do after you ask their profession the first time, none of that makes any sense.
I think the OP is misunderstanding the question as to 'what else do you do when not teaching ’ or 'what do you like to do after work '?
Also flaunting wealth won’t make you popular with many people unless you are spending it on them.
Being a heiress is like having herpes… we acknowledge you probably can’t help it, but it still makes strangers uncomfortable and you should only tell people you’re intimate with.
Just answer, “I try to keep busy.”
No one needs to know your financial reality. Unless you WANT them to know. Then, try this, “I’m an heiress. I don’t have to work, Today I’m slumming? What’s your special?”
That’s your answer right there. Order a few bottles of wine at the restaurant and you will be every restaurant owner’s best friend.
I have to admit.
I forget names, even of people that i’ve known for years.
So i sometimes see people that i’ve talked to frequently but can’t remember their name so i’m embarrassed to say hi.
Probably gives the impression that i’m rude or something
I don’t own a restaurant.
I normally don’t ask people too much. I answer their questions with a pause. I ask about their interests. If they like the same type of bands, I will start talking about the band. Then, I start hearing the negative comments no matter which interests I share with them. They started the conversation. They want me to come back to their business. Sometimes, I show up after a month. They will greet me with “Long time no see”. But, I don’t know if they expect I go there every day. Maybe they don’t make too much by selling me. I can take to go meals if this is the problem. But, when I enter in their business, I feel they welcome me. They only show the signs of disapproval after I order the food and pay.Well, I can only guess. That’s why I wanted to ask people about their experience.
I try to be humble. I am not extravagant and I don’t drive sport cars. I don’t want a sport car, either. I am not the one who come and say “Hey, do you know I am a heiress?” I feel they push me to answer the question by repeatedly asking the same question when I go to their business. I didn’t answer at the first time. Then, they told me they are just curious about me because they care. That’s why I answered them.
Of course, I laughed like this before. When they tried to charge me twice, but I got the receipt and showed them I already paid when I ordered the food. I laughed because I felt they did intentionally. I already felt stigmatized. Instead of fighting, I laughed like this. Was it too bad?
I am replying the guy who said “unemployed teachers” Maybe he means they were teachers before and they unemployed now. You definitely understood what we mean. See? That’s why you are a friend of those restauranteurs. You all use the same type of stigma. You all pretend that you didn’t understand something that other people implied. You and those dudes try to pick on others even people were there to help you all to make money. I’ve never asked them anything. They started the conversation. How about the next time, just say a “hello”, get my payment, serve my food and leave me alone? But, you all want to know what I do. Then, start to interact with me. You guys want intimacy by asking other personal questions. I answer because you all insist. You all get mad. But, it is something personal. In the end, you made me to feel I am annoying because you can’t stand the life I got. But, you all still need to make money from me.
Hmmm, ![]()
No, they weren’t asking about my interests. They are not interested to learn about my interests. They asked exactly like this “Beside being a a teacher, is there any other way you make a living?” They clearly want to know how I make a living.Because they don’t understand how a part-time teacher can always eat out, be dressy, and go to concerts. I tried not to share too much. But, they insisted asking me every time I go there. They said they asked because they “care”
I remember when Michel opened the new Tavern and stated (maybe in these very pages) he didn’t want any English teachers in the bar.
From what I can tell, your main interest seems to be yourself .
Hey, can you hit my solution box? I think I solved the mystery of why the restaurant owner didn’t like you.
The funniest thing in this poll. It is because I didn’t give the names. But, people are giving the names. People give the names of the restaurants I have never been before. So, I definitely didn’t have problems at many places. I know 5 restaurants run by expats. Only one of them treats me better the other 4, the owners are friends. So, I don’t know if they are gossipers. I did nothing to bother them. One of them asked me the question, the other three didn’t ask me. But, I was shocked when they already knew about my job even I have never shared with them. This is a stalking behavior.
I have no idea who “Michel” is, but kinda funny he pulled a “we don’t want yer kind around here” in 2025. Hope his business failed.
This was back in the early 2000s. Yeah well I’m sure he didn’t turn any away if they had money. Those days Taipei had lots of foreign engineers and business people…his business did kinda fail cos he went the crappy sports bar route and the economy went downhill …
Who are ‘you guys’?![]()
You talking about the Australians again right…it’s always their fault.
Those restauranteurs.
