Last night I plugged the phone in, and it charged for 2 seconds then stopped charging, and the computer shows “USB power surge”. And I could smell what smelled like burning plastic coming from the charge port.
So I had to take the phone apart, and I could not find anything wrong or burnt on the board with the USB-C charge port. However the battery appears slightly swollen.
I can replace the board with the charge port for about 300-something, and maybe spend another 300 to buy a new battery…
Is it worth it? The phone works fine after I put everything back together, after a couple of rounds of plugging it in and taking it back out, and smelling some plastic again, and in desperation I jammed the cable in and now it charges fine. However I’m scared it won’t charge once I unplug it, or it could burst into flames.
What should I do? Don’t really have money for a new phone but replacing the board and battery is a little bit of money.
Hang onto it for a few days and see how things go, could have been some foreign matter in the charging plug too. If no good, check out the 2nd hand phone shops for something similar.

Yes, definitely back up everything while you still can.
Update: I just received the parts, and have replaced both the battery and the board that holds the charging board. Repair was simple, once I figured out how to get the phone open I just unscrewed the part with the board, popped the wires and cables off, and put the new board in, put the wires and cables back in, and reassembled the phone. Now the phone charges fine without it losing connection everytime the phone is moved. The battery came out next. It was kinda taped on, but again I popped the connection off, put the new battery in, and booted the phone up, and it works fine, as if nothing happened (well the phone did lose time, but as soon as the SIM card is inserted the phone synced and got the date/time right).
An iphone would never let me make such a repair without paying a ton of money to Apple for it (which would be almost the cost of a new phone).
These are the old parts. Together the parts cost 714nt (including the 7-11 delivery fee)
I noticed internet reception is not as good as before… Hopefully I didn’t ruin an antenna.
