Help prevent internet censorship in Australia
The Federal Government is planning to force all Australian servers to filter internet traffic and block any material the Government deems ‘inappropriate’. Under the plan, the Government can add any ‘unwanted’ site to a secret blacklist.

Testing has already begun on systems that will slow our internet by up to 87%, make it more expensive, miss the vast majority of inappropriate content and accidentally block up to 1 in 12 legitimate sites. Our children deserve better protection - and that won’t be achieved by wasting millions on this deeply flawed system.
Please sign the following petitions to stop Communications Minister Senator Conroy’s plan to introduce internet filtering, i.e. censorship, in Australia. As of today, an estimated 55,000 signatures have been collected by GetUp, and a further 22,000 by TakingItGlobal. Add yours now!

:eh:

What makes you think they’ll never do it? You must have a lot more trust in governments than I do.

And it’s hardly just “my problem”, or even a wireless network security issue, to which one can simply buy a solution.

What exactly constitutes “inappropriate” material according to the government, and who are they to say that someone should or shouldn’t view it?

I’d like to see more about this so-called “secret blacklist.”
And he says there’s an opt-out option, too, so you’ll still be able to watch your kiddy porn if you want.
And from what I’ve seen, there’s pretty much across the board opposition to this bloke, so as Tycoon says, it’s not going to happen.
And even if it does, its Australia for god’s sakes – a few pictures more or less of ovine en deshabille on the Internet isn’t going to kill you.

What you are talking about already exists in Dubai. And the solution is to use a VPN.
