Help! Vegemite fix needed

Um, I’m a bit embarrassed to mention this, but:

I have resorted to sticking my finger into an old Vegemite jar and then licking myself (actually, my finger) in order to get the last remnants off. Actually, I think the jar’s been empty for about a month now, but I’m still in a state of denial.

I don’t think my National Health care will cover me for this sort of problem, so can anyone help me out with a Vegemite fix? Is it still available at the Far Eastern Dept. Store supermarket?

My condition is deteriorating,

The Big Babou

The foreign grocery, which has fruit and vegetables on a table outside (sorry, Ive forgotten its name), on Chung Shan North Rd, Section 7 in Tien Mu. Heading north, it’s on the left about 100 m. north of Tien Mu East Rd. It’s just before the Friday’s restaurant on the other side of the road.

Yep,

got my vegemite fix there last week at the Tienmou grocery shop–just stop any foreigner in Tienmou as everyone knows where it is located.

That’s the place! Didn’t see Vegemite, but I got Marmite there - I mean ‘Tesco’s Yeast Extract’

Don’t suppose anybody knows where you can pick up Irn Bru, Scotland’s No.1 hangover cure?

They sell own-brand marmite at Tesco’s in Taiwan. Unfortunately, there’s no Tesco’s in Taipei yet, and the nearest one is in Taoyuan. But it’s worth an occasional out-of-town trip – there are lots of wonderful English goodies there (real biscuits, like ginger snaps, rich tea, etc., superior quality British cha, and much more). I’ve heard that Taipei will get its first Tesco’s some time next year – I can hardly wait.

As a vegetarian who eats sandwiches for at least 80% of all my meals and who loves to spread marmite in every sandwich, no matter whether it contains cheese, egg, potato, rice, noodles, beancurd, vegetables, salad, a combinaion of all the above (my favourite), or whatever, I cannot live without my marmite!

And while on the subject of food and Tesco’s:

The single item of eatables that I miss most of all but cannot find anywhere in Taiwan is nuts. That is, unadulterated virgin nuts, especially hazelnuts and Brazil nuts. These are sold in all kinds of packages and combinations in just about every supermarket in the U.K. But here in Taiwan, nuts are ALWAYS processed – they’re either roasted or smothered in salt, honey, garlic, etc., and usually both. I hate that – it totally spoils them.

So, does anyone know where the real and natural product can be found here? Unfortunately, Tesco’s has not included these among the items of its home-country stock that it imports.

If you want the real thing (un-processed nuts) I suggest you go to a supplier of baking goods. I mean the one’s that cater to the home bakers. There are a few around Dihua Street. I don’t have the exact address but look around there and you’ll find it. Some of them cater to bakeries and restaurants too (whole sale).

I used to get all my nuts there (hazel, macademia, and more …)

They are not cheap but it’s the only place you’ll find them.

Thank you, Nox. I’m more than willing to pay through the nose for hazelnuts. I’ll be heading for Dihua double pronto.

I’m actually inundated with vegemite at the mo’. I asked my mother to grab some and she arrived with two litre jars of the stuff. I mean, there’s only so much a koala can bare.

For those in Taizhong (alright, alright, I’ll acquiesce to the pinyin nazi) with the craving, Fingas usually has it.

Irn Bru, now there’s a fine beverage! Not even available in HK so I doubt we’ll find it here.

How about ginger beer, Lucozade, bitter lemon… Perhaps we should band together and start importing?

They sold Lucozade in 7-11s and lots of other stores a few years back, but then it disappeared, as so many imported products do – I suppose that the locals just didn’t take to it and they couldn’t move enough stock.

Marmite also made a brief appearance in Wellcome supermarkets about 15 or so years ago. I bought a dozen jars at once, but as soon as the first batch disappeared from the shelves, it was never replaced. That has happened so many times with so many different kinds of products. So now, whenever something new that I like to eat or drink appears in a supermarket, I buy up as much as I can carry and keep, and don’t hold out much hope that it’ll be available for long.

One kind of ginger beer, produced by Coca Cola, is available in many shops. It’s not as good as my mum used to make, but it’s better than nothing.

And now Wellcome has stopped putting gouda and edam cheese on the fridge shelf in its store in San Xia. They are only selling this terrible processed cheese.

I’ve got to go to Tapei now or Tesco in Taoyuan but they are bloody expensive.

managed to find IRN Bru at the Park and Save on my last trip to Hong Kong in May. Brought back as much as I could carry. Almost worth giving up my ARC and doing Visa Runs again.

My mouth’s watering. Do you mean Park and Shop?

I think he means Park and Shop; there’s no Park and Save franchise in Hong Kong.

Vegemite is at Taipei 101 mall’s Jason’s now. Two sizes - 235g for $229 and the next bigger size is $399. It’s next to the marmite.

Hi guys,

It is now March 2012 and I am in search of Vegemite.

Does anyone know where I can get Vegemite in Taiwan? We went to Jasons in Taipei yesterday and they don’t stock it.

Actually just need a photo of the existence of Vegemite in Taiwan (or China), so if you own a bottle, please let me know so I can trouble you for a picture of it, then I don’t need to buy it!

Thanks,
Mary from Chiayi
