I have never made it to a HH. The main reason is my location, I’m in Taichung county. I would be happy to come if they were held on the weekend. I was wondering how everyone felt about weekends vs. weekdays.
This has been done to death. Overwhelming concensus is that weekends are “me” time or “family” time. It’s also very difficult if not impossible to persuade barkeeps to offer the discounts, etc. on what’s usually their busiest nights of the week. Hence Wednesday or Thursday HH.
However, the highheidyins up at the Big Hoose DO realize that this curtails the options for the hicks from the sticks such as yourself, which is why there are often F.com-related activities and events held on the weekends but which are not necessarily happy hour things. I can’t remember what any of them have been as I’ve never attended any, but I’m pretty sure there have been a few thingys.
I would definitely go less at weekends but the Thursday night thing is a killer. no option to throw a sicky as Friday is the maid’s day and she arrives at 8 come hell or high water.
I like them on the weekdays b/c I have too many other things happening on the weekend.
I also don’t work in the mornings so I can stay up late and drink bubbly pops.
I think this qualifies as “me time” and not everyone has families. I would guess more don’t. I didn’t realize we were getting significant deals. How much was the beer last night? Furthermore I feel it would be an easy pitch to get these set up on weekends.
3am on a saturday mornin…in Tainan no less. Chile…I love you. Viva!
It would be to my benefit if ya’ll would schedule an HH on a weekend so I could hike my ass up to the big smoke for some debauchery. Otherwise to hell with it. No way am I makin it up to Taipei for a night of drinking (regardless of local) to wake up half in the bag. Work’s a tad more important.
Otherwise I’m down till sunrise. Just not on the weekdays. I’m gettin old. Fragile, if you will.
I can understand why HH is on a weekday, however a weekend would be preferable to me, living as I do in Changhua. But then, based on my attempt to go to Taipei for the curry night, and getting sidetracked in a Starbucks having coffee with my ex-gf (and it was only coffee…and dinner. But that’s all, get your minds out of the gutter), I didn’t make it to the curry night. Somewhat alleviated by arriving home tonight and finding a PM saying the venue had changed - I’d have gone to the wrong place anyway.
But, I’d attempt to go to one on a weekend. Saturday night preferably, but Sunday would be ok too.
HHs are every month, right? Would it be possible to do one on a weekend, say every 3 months? 6 months? Once a year?
Or would a Taipei HH on a weekend be full of the out-of-towners and lacking in the Taipei folks? Not that that’s a bad thing - rumour has it that you Taipei folk are all smelly.
Also, what about a CNY HH? Something during the week’s holidays for those of us who don’t have family in Taiwan, aren’t going camping in Kending and aren’t leaving the country. And especially those, like me, who haven’t gotten my ass in to gear to make plans for CNY. Any takers?
There’s no reason why other stuff can’t go on. There’re extra meetings like curry night, games club, etc. People can just PM the people they want to meet and suggest something, perhaps.
There are bound to be a bunch of people eating or drinking or doing something wholesome like hiking, sometime over weekends.
I much prefer weekdays. The earliest I have to go to work is 1pm on Wednesdays (4pm on other weekdays). On Saturdays, I have to go to work at 9am (so Friday’s out) and I finish my private at 10 or 11pm (so after a day of teaching, I’m in no mood for partying). Thursdays are the best and it helps that I don’t drink (to excess). I’ve never understood the point of drinking to get drunk, not since I was 20, but I digress…
Having one fixed weekday night is bad for the people who work that evening, as well as for those who have to get up particularly early the next morning. But not everyone has the same schedule all week long.
I.e., varying the weekday night (Monday this time, Tues. next time, and so on) would be preferable to the current pattern. Tossing in a weekend night one out of four or five times would be ideal, too. As it is, there are some people (I don’t mean me) who are always left out, which is, frankly, unfair.
Sure, there are weekend activities (hiking, gaming), but not everyone’s into those particular activities.
I once again urge the powers that be to vary the schedule a bit: mostly weeknights, but on varying nights, with a weekender tossed in every now and then.
Whether or not it is practical is another matter. I understand the difficulty in getting discounts/special offers on weekends. But, if discounts are valued for the lower prices, then perhaps a once-in-four or five HHs that take place on a weekend rather than a weeknight could be scheduled at a place that already has lower priced drinks and eats?
And don’t some pubs not even open until the evening? I remember years ago DV8 over on Jinhua Street didn’t open, much to my displeasure, on Saturdays until 8:00 pm or sometime late. I often wanted to go in earlier in the afternoon and have a few pints…but, the door was closed and locked. If any pub still has such odd (IMO) hours, perhaps we could request a special day-time opening for a private Forumosa function? I suppose we’d have to guarantee some substantial turnout, however, to make such an arrangement appeal to the venue’s owner/manager.
