Xiangshan (Taipei)
Hutoushan (Taoyuan)
Dongyangshan (New Taipei - Manyuan National Forest)
Yanmingshan (Taipei - Northern side, also has hot springs)
Alishan (Alishan - High elevation and you can spend a couple days on the different trails here)
Taipingshan (Yilan County - long way of travel by train and bus to arrive, also has hotsprings but if you want to do both stay for a night at a resort)

Check out Parkbus Taiwan, see if they’re running any group hikes you’d be suitable for.

I also recommend Caoling historical trail (草嶺古道), which is probably intermediate.

It’s a part of the Tamsui-Kavalan trail networks, that used to be the main trail people took to go from Taipei to present day Yilan.

Once you get on top of the ridge, you’d see the Pacific and Turtle Island. On a good day, the view is pretty spectacular. If you finish the uphill part pretty quickly, you can also walk to Taoyuangu (桃源谷), which is a open grassland on a hill with a herd of water buffaloes.

There are a lot of ways to plan the trip, and you should consider how much hiking you can do. The site below has GPX files.

You can finish the hike by walking down to the railway and ride the train to your next destination.

I recommend getting a taxi (200) from Fulong station to the trail head. Then you’ll have more energy to explore Taoyuan valley.

Yes, absolutely. That was what I did as well.

This is the best source, detailed and well written, of English information about easy hiking in Taiwan you will find. Pick the routes you like and you will have enough hiking ahead of you for the time you plan to be here.

I think you should narrow down the area a bit. All of Taiwan? Close to Taipei?

The easiest (degree of difficulty, convenience to get there) and most rewarding in terms of scenery in the Taipei area are in my view Sandiaoling (3 waterfall trail) and the Pingxi Crags (Pingxi valley). Interesting scenery, near railway stations, not overcrowded, nor deserted, selfie-able…

If you don’t mind getting out into the country a bit, in Taichung Country the Guguan “7 Heroes” are all decent hikes. If u just got time for one… Well:

  • tangmadan is the shortest, but does have a separate and decently lengthy route that leads to a nice waterfall.
  • baimao is short but sweet, got some wonderful steep scrambles and a cool ridge or two
  • Pojinjia probably the most scenic of the bunch, but also fairly lengthy
All of these hikes are probably around 6-8 hours for the average hiker

If you don’t want to spend too long on a bus getting up there, and are in Taichung, more accessible are Dakeng 3-5-4 or 4-5-3, although trail 4 might be closed rn. Worst case you can take five right into the very… fragrant Xinshe and rent a Ubike and ride back down, which is fun as it’s mostly downhill on the big road.

In the north… Um, if ur going by Jioufen, the short but fun 孝子山 isn’t too far. It’s mostly remarkable for, well, this;

which is very titillating

There’s a lot of other ones but I am lazy and do not want to write more

I second that, @whensmonkey . Did it this summer with the whole family. Great view at rocky top of the valley below where the nearest town is. Can get to town by train or by even a free (small) bus from Xizhi train station.

I found this one through some wild luck, was playing geoguessr with a friend and we got this place. No clue where it was, but the map showed us and when we came over to Taiwan together we rented a car and went out that way. Super fun little hike.

Why hike? Just hire a chopper

hmm… maybe that was a terrible suggestion… Someone just got gored by a bull on that trail. She was taking photos a safe distance away from the herd, but a water buffalo bull sneaked up from behind her and gored her, landing her in the hospital for 7 days.

A water buffalo killed a female tourist in Yangmingshan back in 2021. They are not as tame and cuddly as they appear.
