Hapenzhongling Cross Road (哈盆中嶺越嶺道) was historically, during the Japanese occupation, a route for the army and local aboriginals, many who traversed this road via horses. The Road goes from Fushan Village, Wulai, through Hapen tribe to Lunpi Village. Along the trial, there are historical remains: old Hapen tribe, canon fort, checkpoint, police office, and various other cultural traces. Along the Hapen creek, one can see everywhere marks and footprints of wild pigs; as there is rich and plentiful evidence to witness the biological diversity along this route. At the tribe village, banana trees grow abundantly. Formosa Monkeys are regular guests here too.

AShong, who is the son of a forest mountain and the disciple of the Atayal hunter, will lead us into a Hapen area called “Taiwanese Amazon” to experience and learn a whole new world: the interaction between aborigines and nature. We will experience the history between Atayal ancestors and the Japanese and visit historical sites. We will also enter the world of a true hunter, a world you have never seen before.

During the hike, Hunter AShong will be our teacher and the Hapen area will be our classroom. Besides the hunter’s interpretation and demonstration along the trail, we will learn his teachings by practice. Consequently, groups will be assigned real tasks to perform, whether it is building a hunting hut, setting up a tent, gathering wild vegetables, cutting firewood, cooking meals and so on. Besides learning how to be an aboriginal hunter and learning the wisdom of survival amongst the wild land, we will have a group discussion to share with each other concepts and thoughts about the “Leave No Trace” movement and about environmental ethics.
