Hotel suggestions for tainan?

Me and a buddy of mine are coming from the US for an MBA program at NCKU in Tainan in about a week and are arriving a day early before the dorms let us in. Anyone have any suggestions for a good, cheap-midrange hotel that we could stay at that is relatively close to the high speed train or NCKU? Any help is appreciated!

High speed train is a MILE out. All the hotels next to the train station are GROTTY, apart from Shangri-La. Tainan’s a little more expensive for cheap, clean places to sleep, no idea why. Here’s a decent looking one that internet searches turned up:

From the front of the Train Station (Beimen road) you could also head down Cheng Gong road until you come to the Gong Yuan road traffic light intersection. There should be a 7-11 on your right (the corner). Turn right there into Gong Yuan road and you’ll find a hotel on your right hand side about 50 meters from the intersection. I believe their nightly rates are something like NT1600. The lobby looks great and I’ve seen engineering types come out of there so it can’t be a bad inside the rooms. from the train station it’s about a 5 to 10 minute walk.

There’s one down… I think Minzu Rd, which I stayed in one night and it was pretty good. Of course I can’t remember anything about it (we went there at 6am ish… so yeah). It was pretty big and on the right.

If you are coming into Tainan on the HSR (High Speed Rail) you are going to be out in the boonies, so to speak.
But, there are FREE buses you can take into town. FREE.
Just keep asking the drivers for…the corner of FUCIAN LU (Street) & NAMEN LU (Street). Make a cross motion with your fingers when you say " FUCIAN LU (Street) & NAMEN LU (Street)"…one of them will eventually figured it out.

A good hotel in a well-known location is there :
Its on the corner of FUCIAN LU (Street) & NAMEN LU (Street). Nice looking place with a teas shop on the ground floor; easy for identifying it.
Diagonal from the KLIM Market…across the street from the CONFUSIOUS Temple place.
Maybe The Chief can chime in with the name of the place;he & his family stayed there a while back. It seems to have given him a mind-blank out…but thats another story…it was raining a lot.

Its a good place and mid-range priced + the KLIM market has lots of foods/snacks/etc that you will know (probably).

From the hotel to NCKU campus is a 5 - 10 minute cab ride. Let the desk get the cab for you. Pay no more than NT150 for the ride. You really shouldn’t have any problems.
Oh yeah, it helps to call NCKU…Chen Dah…thats what most of the locals know it as.

thanks for all the help, I appreciate it!

If you can afford NT3400 the Shangri-la is a great place to stay. I know, that’s not cheap, but if it’s only for one day, it’s a good way to welcome yourself to Taiwan!
