Hotels/motels in taichung

looking for a place to stay in taichung, not a five or fourstar place. just need a clean and safe place to overnight.
any ideas anybody?

bumpity bump … anyone??

Taichung hostel. 2372 1935. Not a hostel but a government run hotel. Great budget option. Good location near the art gallery. NT1800 for a room with a 40% discount on weekends and 50% on weekdays.

Thanks so much Mucha! So how do I go about obtaining the discount? Is it NT1800 - 40%?

It should be automatic. Hotels in Taiwan have a list price which they only show to scare people. Seriously, it’s a little like buying glasses. The price is 10,000. Oh, but we have a 50% disocunt. Really? So when do you charge the full price? Never. It’s always a discount.

The price should be around NT1100. It’s NT1800 discounted by 40%. Price could have gone up slightly by now. Rooms are very basic but very clean and renovated a year or so ago.

I recently stayed in an okay place in Taichung, literally across the road from the train station - called Fuh Chun Hotel. NT$600. The room had no window but it was clean, the bed was comfortable, it had a separate bathroom with a tub, and it had hot water, small fridge, television, all you need for a night or two.

I checked out a place about 50 metres along the street, on the 6th or 7th floor is a “hotel” of sorts, and the room there was nicer than the one at Fuh Chun, sort of Japanese style but with a comfortable mattress - $500. This was for a Sunday night however, maybe more on Saturday.

Just wanted to update this thread after a weekend trip to Taichung.

This place is now closed. I learned the hard way. I schlepped to it from the high speed rail shuttle only to find it overgrown with weeds and a chain lock on the gate.

I took a look at a room at this place. I have stayed at many budget travel places in Southeast Asia but I couldn’t quite handle this one. As I came in the lobby two guests were complaining about mosquitoes in their room (not a good sign). The lady at the desk handed them a can of what looked like roach spray (a further negative sign). She quoted a rate of almost NT$700. The hall carpets were pretty dirty. The room I looked at was fairly worn and tattered and the whole floor smelled of cigarette smoke which seemed to be permeating from the air conditioning grates. I took a pass on this one.

I stayed at the Twinstar Hotel 158 Fuhsing Rd., Sec. 4 (04)2226-1811, www.gohotel.com.tw. I had stayed there several years ago and it was pretty good. This time around was even better. They have upgraded the rooms and are now very modern and clean. Big flat screen TV, mini-fridge, granite counters, two nice size double beds and a table and chairs in my room, though the room itself was not that big. Good bathroom with tub and plenty of hot water. Staff was nice and friendly and spoke basic English. Good with what little tourist info I asked about.

Paid NT$1400 for a Saturday night with breakfast included (which I slept through unfortunately). A bit more than I wanted to pay but I felt it was worth it, especially after checking around on rates for the bigger hotels in Taichung, which was at least NT$1,000 higher and up. Location was pretty convenient, just behind the train station. All in all one of the better mid-priced deals in Taichung I think.

I saw another hotel in the area (after I checked in so I didn’t check it out) called the Palmer Hotel but couldn’t find any info on it on the 'net. Anyone know it?

My Taichung trip was very pleasant and I plan to return so any additions to this thread would be appreciated.
