Properties in the countryside/mountains I will have to do the legwork and talk to locals or local estate agents right?
There is also housefun.com.tw Sometimes is easy just go to the area where you want to live and visit the real estate agents office there, not every property is listed online. Not sure if that works as well in countryside. Good Luck.

Real estate in Taiwan works a little differently than in NA. There is only one real estate broker that represents the seller. They take a 1% cut from the seller and that’s that. As a buyer, just walk into their local offices/websites and check out the listings. If you’re interested, ask them to take you to look… they’ll scooter you over there and let you poke around. I’ve done it several times; those real estate agents are pretty bored most of the time.
The realtor takes 5% of the transaction (1% will come from the buyer and 4% from the seller). Yes, they are very bored, especially in Taipei these days when few people can afford to buy homes in the city.
