Household registration on rental property, what happens when we move?

i would chat to your new landlord and offer to pay a little extra to cover any extra cost if he lets you register there, also tell him you not planning to claim and tax relief for your rent. if he is still having second thoughts maybe suggest having a contract with a lower rent for the tax office and another one to make up the difference.

OK, I misunderstood. I believe my Taiwanese wife is the “head” of the household on the family registration, but that is the same document I have always used when applying for ARC/APRC. Before we owned our own homes, we used her family member’s permanent address so we never needed to change anything when moving around. We also had our kids on various different registrations so that they could go to the preferred school, but after they are accepted into the school, you can immediately change it back and they can remain at the school. I’m sure if you ask your colleagues, they will know someone who can help you out.

No. You do not have Household Registration. You are a foreigner.

I’m on my wife’s though. I didn’t know that he meant with him as head of household.

You only have HHR if you are a Taiwanese citizen. APRC or ARC holders do not have them or need them.

I hate the HHR system as you basically either have to own the house, or have the landlord’s permission to register, and landlords are incentivized to NOT allow tenants to register.

Why can’t they just base it on the address you live at? like in most other countries, you just register at any city hall or government agency. In the US you just register your DL at any address.

This is one way why it sucks to be a Taiwan citizen compared to ARC or APRC holder. What if nobody in the family owns a house? It sucks more that I am unable to get government assistance because of HHR issues.

If it were me and my Taiwanese spouse, I’d go to one or two local real estate branches (maybe 1 big-name one and 1 small local one) and tell them what you need to be “solved” and see if they don’t have some client willing to “rent” an address, like one would rent an apartment.
If you haven’t done so, try also to get a P.O. box at the local post office (costs like NT$300 per year) and then just have your more important documents mailed there.
Good luck and keep people posted as others may face such a situation themselves.

The Ministry of the Interior plans to introduce amendments to strengthen tenant rights.

Under the proposal, landlords who prevent tenants from applying for rent subsidies or registering their household will face penalties.

How did you end up resolving the HHR issue, Explant? We’re thinking of selling our apartment and just renting so may be facing the same situation ourselves in the near future.
