How did Nickelback become the laughing stock of music

Now, to begin, I am a fan of music but I do not play it, now I am not a fan of it in the Rolling Stone contributor way, but I am deep enough into music that nothing I truly like is mainstream (but I am not afraid to admit when a great pop song is a great song) and I like different eras and genres.

That being said, I do not like Nickelback, to me they are just a corny-ass rock band (of which their are plenty) but I am a bit perplexed as to why they have become the symbol for all that is shit about music. Surely there has to be someone worse out there, someone cornier, someone cheesier? What am I missing, they are basically a modern day Boston (a shit band, and do not try and tell me otherwise, Amanda, More than a Feeling, are some of the biggest, festering piles of aged Gruyere ever put on wax).

Please enlighten me as to not why they suck, but why the so Epically suck, and why they are basically the Ed Hardy t-shirts of rock and roll.

Middle of the road rock sound. Uncool long-haired lead singer.

Plus they accidentally released the same song twice: youtube.com/watch?v=pvujgcbaCF8

Modern-day version of The Eagles.

wow, that is eerie.

further on this, I think I have figured it out after partially watching a few of their videos on youtube. Nickelback is what would happen if the cheesiest ‘New Country’ (the worst genre of music) artists were asked to write and perform rock and roll.

They reek of effort, they have zero sincerity, believability or integrity, the whole process just feels dirty and wrong. They basically date-raped (hyphen for Grammar Constable Jimi) my ears.

Nickelback are the date-rapists of music, and no one likes a date-rapist. My ears feel groped, and they may or may not have been molested. I am afraid if I report them, I may be shamed for admitting to have listened to them.

They’re part of the West’s plan to influence impressionable Chinese minds. Seriously.

It doesn’t help that the lead singer looks like Nick Cage.

This is why I don’t listen to much “modern” muzak.
I declare that I have until now no idea who Nickelback are, let alone their supposed songs. But they surely are evil…
A quick youtube search confirms same.
Horrid in the extreme.
Someone wake me up when common sense music makes a comeback…

The corniness and cheesiness mentioned in the OP has got me watching Yanni live performances on YouTube.

Nickelback was really popular back when I was in college but after years of being played back to back everywhere, people are just really tired of them.

Same here, all five sentences. I try to be open-minded–different strokes for different folks and all that–but the two songs I looked at anyway were just laughable.

Yeah. It’s a popular thing to hate on Nickelback. My Facebook feed certainly attests to that.

However, if I were to be stranded on a desert island with only one record, I’d rather it be one of theirs than contemporary “R&B” or hip-hop. :2cents:

In the UK we say the same thing about Savage Garden.

Some artists are hated on, even though their music is not really appreciably worse than a lot of the other trash out there. Justin Bieber. Lil Wayne. Nikki Minaj. Usher. All seen as the epitome of trash music amongst a lot of equally trashy trash.

What is perplexing is why more artists manage to escape this label than get stuck with it. Slipknot certainly deserve more ridicule than Nickelback. Ditto Miley Cyrus, T.I. and Swiss Beatz. I could go on endlessly.

Fuckoff. Slipknot are awesome.

Taking drugs and drinking on Sundays is not good for your health. :2cents:

I’ve repeatedly heard the memes about Nickelback but quite honestly couldn’t think of any of their songs so took a trip to YouTube. I don’t think I’d heard any before, and a few 30 second listens wouldn’t make me want to hear more. But as jimipreslely says, I’d still take Nickelback over contemporary R&B or hip hop.

Life is too short for crappy music. Fortunately, there’s a lot of really good new music coming out lately, particularly from Europe, so there’s no need to listen to crap music or avoid new stuff.

If you like them that is your prerogative. However they are more like Insane Clown Posse than Pantera if you ask me.

I certainly wouldn’t buy any of their music, but at least they have comedy value, funny masks and their songs occasionally change key.
Nickleback probably get slammed because they appear to be so bland. However, their songs are structurally sound and adhere to a format. The reason I personally think people hate against Nickleback is that they solidly represent mainstream, and it is cool to stand against mainstream rock. They are an easy target and they have unfortunately found themselves in a position where they are stigmatized as a representation for all that is outdated, bland and uncool about their genre. It had to be someone, and it just happened to be Nickleback. This could just have easily have happened to Staind.
However, for a band so hated, they still manage to get double (or was it triple?) platinum.

For me, Nickleback are the kind of band I will tolerate on the radio but find myself thinking “Oh no, I have to listen to this again…” There are far worse culprits. I turn the radio off when George Ezra comes on. I can’t stand that guy’s music.

Happens to actors too. Matthew McConaghy and Shia Leboef are both mocked for being crap actors. Ben Affleck however gets off for his crimes against acting. In truth they are all as anodine as one another.
