How do we make drivers yield to pedestrians at crosswalks?

Can an adult and a child walk side by side within those green gaps?

The answer is no.

I’m surprised nothing is parked there on that newer stretch of green paint.

So right now seems like Taipei, Taichung, and Kaoshiung are going to try removing scooters from sidewalks by removing sidewalk parking. New Taipei and Taoyuan are a bit reserved about this due to what they say is a different traffic environment. Tainan says the policy should be adapted to local conditions.

To help protect students this school in Taoyuan has crossing guards who run across the street with a rope with flags/ribbons on it to completely block off traffic.

I don’t know what we can do about this, all we can do is get used to people driving on sidewalks. Everyone drives scooters on sidewalks, foreigners included. E-Scooters are the worst because you can’t hear them coming, and their behavior is often worse, like blocking entire sidewalks just to save them a couple of minutes.

Even better would be if all pedestrians started riding a scooter. Then, no more sidewalks necessary. Problem solved!

Another police officer failed to yield for pedestrians crossing the street, this time in New Taipei.

But then where would we all park??? Or put our outdoor kitchen???

It seems like they’re heavily enforcing the yielding currently.

I’ve experienced cars stopping for me (as a pedestrian) very eagerly these days in Taipei. One guy even rolled down his window and started shouting at me to cross in front of him because I wanted to let him go first… :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Translation:
Our urban environments are shite. Can we keep them that way?

That painted green area is useless anyway.

They were worried about their own scooters that they have parked on the green paint

The only solution is to ban bicycles

Ban pedestrians. Problem solved

Damn they used that in my town when I was kid

Don’t think we need any more scooters on the road.

I’ve been experiencing the same thing in Kaohsiung! From a taxi driver, no less! Some pedestrians were waiting for my taxi to turn, but my taxi driver waved for them to cross the street first.

Funny how just one month of enforcement can change so much.

Taiwanese authorities are liberal … with the coat of green paint.

Same here! My daily walk from home to the Lotus covers 11 crossings, the last two days I have not used “fecking gobshite” once. I am waving thank you to the considerate cars and scooters.

Taiwan is cracking down on traffic violations after new laws took effect in early May. Police have reported large increases in citations for infractions like not stopping for pedestrians and crosswalks and not coming to a full stop at intersections.

Elderly lady is stuck at an intersection in Hsinchu as no one will yield for her. The car driver’s wife gets out to help her cross and even then they almost get hit by some scooters who don’t yield. Second part of the video shows a narrow sidewalk. In 2.6km length there are 146 poles/obstructions on the narrow sidewalk…

When the wife tries to cross back there are still vehicles that don’t yield. Also Taiwan’s pedestrian hell is making the news in Japan too.

Chen Xuesheng of the KMT is very mad about pedestrians crossing the street using their phones. Recently he has noticed that pedestrians are slow and he is mad that he has to wait for them when he’s driving and they are on their phones. He also says the MOTC should consider too that sometimes those of us that drive can get mad too!

Not sure what he expects…he says he agrees with pedestrian safety…but at the same time gets mad about having to wait for pedestrians…a simple thing that ensures pedestrian safety? Dude is 71 years old…does he sprint across the street every time he has to walk somewhere?
