How do we make drivers yield to pedestrians at crosswalks?

Window tint, and dumb ass pedestrians

Edit: It seems the latest is that 7 students are OHCA.

Holy shit…major incident in New Taipei’s SanXia. Just happened so not much info yet. For some unknown reason a driver slammed into several pedestrians in front of BeiDa elementary school. 4 people OHCA, several people severely injured. This happened as kids were getting off of school.

So far it seems to be 16 injured.
Seems to be many children were struck and people were performing CPR while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

One look is enough. Glad I don’t have cable TV. I lived near that school for years. It’s a very crowded street, as the hospital and the highway are at the far end. The road from the Bei Da community empties right into it. The school is a nightmare in the morning with parents stopping and dropping off their kids, double parking and parking on the sidewalk in bumper to bumper traffic.

Afternoon is a different story.

Absolutely heartbreaking. Those poor kids.

Update: This has popped up on my reddit thread also. Seems that the poop is the old fella accidentally backed into a car and then fled the scene. Christ.

The scene at pretty much every elementary school in Taiwan. After years of complaining the local police now sometimes stand outside the school my kids go to, sometimes meaning usually one day, two at most of the week, unless it’s raining meaning a maximum chaos day and then they don’t show up.

There’s a public multistory car park right next to the school, it’s free for 30mins and has more than enough spaces early in the morning so absolutely no excuse. School has been regualrly sending notices to parents pretty much begging drivers to avail of the free car park instead of endangering kids. The police, if they’re not just standing at the gate doing nothing, only stand at the bus stop clearing cars from it and completely ignoring those parked on red lines either side of it and those double parked at the brand new motorcycle parking spots put in at great expense and disruptions last year to get the motorcycles off the sidewalk outside the school. The result is many of the motorcyle spots are empty as they’re blocked by cars and cars are now parking on reds and double parking farther from the bus stop making it often difficult to safely/legally enter and exit the free car park…

One super asshole who I seen arguing with the police on more than one ocassion was presumably fined and now uses the free car park, uses as in enters and dumps his car in a lane in the car park blocking half of it rather than parking in a bay, abandoning it for 20mins. He’s not even accompanying his kids to the school gate, they make their own way and he goes and buys breakfast.

If it wasn’t for these aholes there would be no traffic jam, everyone would be on their way quicker and all the kids would safely get to school on time, instead they’re rushing to get their kids in ontime as they’re late due to the traffic snarls they’re creating.

Can’t imagine what the parents of the kids in that SanXia accident are going through. I hope, knowing it’s in vain, that something finally happens and people start taking traffic safety around schools seriously. There are still parents insisting their kids wear masks in school and trying to demand others do the same, and yet they somehow can’t see the real danger right oustide the gates.

This really is the main problem with the majority of Taiwan’s traffic accidents, IMO.

And behind them a completely ineffective legislative system that cares too little
About public safety.

And as someone said in another thread, the social norm is to weep and move on.

Just renewed his license in February this year! Car is a 2003 and underwent it’s compulsory inspection (not that that means anything really) already this year, insurance up to date at least although likely the bare minimum so won’t cover the damage done.

FB link for as long as it lasts, doesn’t show the school side accident. Guy hits the concrete divider when either trying to turn left or u-turn, seems to panic and reverse into the car behind him continually pushing it after contact is made before speeding off towards the school. Car seems to be in extremely good condition for it’s age, even had an intact airbag so either he’s been regularly crashing and repairing or was genuinely a good driver until this incident. Definitely demonstrates the need for retesting before license renewal for the elderly though.

And for not having the school entrance on that side of the busy busy corner. My guess is that nothing will change.

One of the problems in Taiwan is that motorcycles and cars dont care about stopping at a zebra crossing and letting pedestrians cross because none of the pedestrians say anything. When I’ve tried to protest, my Taiwanese wife asks me to please not say anything because the motorcyclist or driver might report me for yelling or insulting them, and the worst would happen like this. If this same thing happened in the West, pedestrians would surely all say something to the driver and on top of that, if there were a police officer, they would find him.

In Kelung, this news says that those who drive on the pavement will be fined 1,800 NTD. Every day, motorcycles pass by on the pavements and also in front of the city hall and nobody says anything to them, lol

I had one police officer reply to a reported motorcyclist on sidewalk that there was no sign saying they couldn’t ride there…Had to escalate to get a fine issued!

They mostly do, but there is almost always some “main character”, who doesn’t.

I always do unless they disappeared already.
But yeah, we know the non confrontational attitude is a thing here.

Reminds me of how here, in Taoxuan, I went to buy something few days ago and some scooter rider with a passenger was riding on the sidewalk, possibly right into backs of some school kids.
When I stared the person down and stepped between them, he/she (I forgot, there are too many of the cases) just turned and used the right part of the sidewalk instead of the left.
(It is one of the rare wide real sidewalks, not painted ones.)

It’s a quite recent behaviour here. Still uncommon if the vehicle is going straight instead of turning. Very rare still if the crosswalk is not at an intersection.

Not to mention taxi drivers and other professional drivers as well as motorist advocate orgs that have actively campaigned to reduce fines and reduce the accessibility of private reports. Not to mention they’ve basically neutered the point system. You’d really have to try to lose your license at this point.

I was this close :pinching_hand::pinching_hand::pinching_hand: to going on some motorist advocacy page here and say some nasty shit about their 帝王走太慢 bullshit. Sure, pedestrians can be idiots here, but that’s really only reflecting all too common an attitude on the roads: I’ll do whatever, and people around me will deal with it. Countries with better traffic tend to have better pedestrians…

Unfortunately, Taiwan’s traffic is not good.

Btw if anyone wants to clown on the driver’s right advocacy group, here’s there page:

I can understand the frustration…but in the end it’s not worth it. A lot of these people seem to have gone off the deep end on this pedestrian emperor crap where they think just about every pedestrian does it on purpose. Can hear them say dumb crap like “行人故意慢慢走!!!”

I remember before I had a taxi driver spout some bullshit while I was in his car and bitch about pedestrians walking slowly on purpose. I wanted to tell him to STFU and just focus on driving. He had no right to go on such a dumbass rant after I asked him to go a little slower since I had an elderly family member visiting me and taxi is the only convenient way to get around to where we were going but he proceeds to ignore me and kept driving faster than necessary or try to make less than safe lane changes. It’s Taichung, I know the area, we are 100% going to hit a red light since there’s traffic no matter what…

Fortunately on the way back home we got an excellent taxi driver that was nice and friendly and drove in a very safe manner, he kept safe distance from both cars and motorcycles. I actually saw him do shoulder checks when lane changing and turning.

I’ve had decent experiences with taxi drivers when my family recently came.

And yeah, it was mostly just out of a desire to clown on them. Not really thinking anyone’s gonna change their minds. They’re retarded and anyone with a brain can tell it’s overdone.
