sands, any punishment which sees you chaing the recipient round the room is not really an effective psychological deterrent! The worst I got was tutoring first years.
See the latter part of my post for the caveat to that effect. However, if you can carry it off with aplomb and get the little bugger black and blue and crying without dislodging a single hair of your Brilliantine coiff, you can instill COMPLETE discipline and utter, utter silence in class. 
I just used to fold my arms and raise one eyebrow at 'em. Worked with Taiwanese kids. Dunno about back 'ere.
That would probably be seen as psychologically distressing and a vicious blow to their self esteem. These kids have RIGHTS! you know. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

Yeah, teaching kids is hard. Toughest six hours a week of my time in Taiwan. I’m over it now, though.
