Is it easy? Does it take special softwares?
I see an untapped market on forumosa I’d like to exploit in a non malicious way of course.

Microsoft Paint is good enough for the basics (old school), there are probably websites that do it for uploaded images. I’ve made a ‘change my mind’ meme that just required typing my text and it autosized and put on the sign. Forumosa is lots of new skills for me, never had a reason to make memes before!

I haven’t used Windows for a long time, but yes. If you’re just dumping some new text on an old picture, you can probably even do it in Word and save as a jpg. To do something difficult needs more skill and better software, but the easy stuff is pretty easy…

I’m getting pedantically annoyed by the vague use of “meme”. Are there different terms for something that actually spreads and becomes famous (what I take meme to mean), vs the dumb little thing I posted above? How can it be a meme if only five people see it?

Oh, I know words drift in meaning - Dawkins’ original discussion focused a lot on religion as meme. But what’s occasionally frustrating is when I want to be more precise, with meme-as-dumb-thing-I-made vs meme-as-a-particular-image-and-caption that everyone is talking about.
I think even the title of the thread shows this: “meme picture thing” is a bit awkward but necessary, because asking “How does one make a meme?” would seem more about making something that becomes famous and spreads around the internet. I dunno, like for now I’ve just made a “mame” (meme + lame), but something that becomes famous graduates to being a meme.
