How long is too long?

I have a dog that is a little over a year old, so he’s still in his puppy years. I used to have a scooter, and would come home during my lunch hour to be with him. Now, that I will be returning to work for the fall,I wont be coming home until 4 or so. And I am considering taking on evening work. How long should a dog be by itself?

So, is that seven hours in total? I’d say the max should be eight hours. Mine have to wait 12 hours, which I’m really trying to change, but they do have plenty of space to run around and each other’s company.
