I have been talking to a clerk at a nearby 7-11 for a few weeks. She has been very helpful. I would like to hire her for a few hours per week to help me adjust to life here (i.e. find things, write some simple notes in Chinese, learn how to shop online, etc) but I would like to have an idea of how much she makes at her 7-11 job before I talk to her. Is this kind of job a minimum wage job? What is minimum wage in Taiwan?
I think 7-11 pays about NT$110 per hour.
ETA-
Now NT$17,780 is the minimum monthly with NT$98 as the hourly rate.
In 1968, it was NT$600 ![]()
In 1978, it was NT$2,400.
In 1986, it was NT$6,900. (and I recall that in 1984, the NT was 38 to the US$)
OK…so about 16,00 per month?
Just because 7-11 exploits her, doesn’t mean you have to, too. Pay her what she’s worth.
Eh? It would be about 18k for a full-timer, wouldn’t it?
…maybe that’s why I’m an english teacher :bravo:
I’m with Jimi.
Her full-time, big-block hourly rate at 7-11 may be low, but if you’re going to employ her for a few hours here and there, maybe you should offer her about NT$300/hour. I think that’s what a lot of Chinese teachers would charge you, so maybe you could package it as “Chinese Lessons Plus.”
Does this make sense? ![]()
$16,000/month for a few hours a week as the OP suggested? That’s probably too much.
Pay her 125NT per hour. Slightly more than 7-11 but not enough to spoil her. I wish that was the wage paid to foreign teachers. ![]()
As of 1 Jan. 2012, the minimum wage is NT$18,780 per month or NT$103.
It depends on what the owner of the individual store wants to pay.
I think that you will need to pay her at least NT$200. The 711 wage is not a good reference for this kind of part time work.

I agree.
“Language Exchange” her for free.
Pay her $300 [at least] per hour you tight nuts, you can all afford it. The mean miserly spirit really isn’t the way to go, you expect a good wage for yourselves but, can’t give it back. Please don’t tell me about market value and local economies, this is an individual case, where one person can help another.
Thanks! Yes, there is a happy medium between paying too little and too much. I have found from personal experience in China that paying too much often results in poor work with the expecation of getting a higher wage - too little and the person is not motivated to come back again. In Shanghai the rates were so confusing that even university students expected the full pay of a trained Chinese teacher - because foreigners had been so careless in paying for services. There will be some language exchange benefit in it for her as it is.
Why pay 300NT for a 7-11 clerk? You’re fucking up the local pay scales over sympathy. They don’t want sympathy or first world paternalism. They want a fair wage for fair work. And that’s what the market dictates.
For the clerical type of work required 150 to 200 NT is generous.
This is a one-off situation not about employing a whole bunch of people, 300 seems fair to me, how do you know she is just a store clerk? Bit demeaning really.
Or to say a store clerk is only limited to earning store clerk wages. Being elitist stinks and is what ruins people IMHO.
It’s not sympathy either, just fairness, for the work she can provide regardless of her current employment.
I think it sucks, that people want to try and pay the least when you have the most to give.
To think that you’re purely helping her and she should be thankful is egotistical to boot.
If it was me and found out about this on a forum I would be very upset.
Jesus Christ the OP can’t win here.
Question: How much do people in 7-11 earn, I need a frame of reference?
Response: You tight cunt. Don’t pay her 7-11 wages. Pay her 300nt.
Response: You stupid cunt. Don’t pay her 300nt you’ll fuck up local pay scales.
Suddenly the guy is either some slave trader or he is destroying the economy.
Has somebody pawned the collective Forumosan brain for some binlang again?
The guy wants to know how much they earn. He hasn’t asked to be called a bunch of names. Did we stop being nice around here or is everyone having a THICK DAY?
You underpay someone, it’s insulting to them. You massively overpay someone, they either wonder what the catch is, or it is insulting to them. It’s not all that hard to try and figure out a motive behind the OP’s request that isn’t based on your lowest gut thoughts that he might be a cunt.
No, 18,000NT$
Actually, there are companies that do that as a business … they are called relocation companies, they do all for you from getting your power hooked up to go shopping with you … but it cost you way more than 18,000NT$ a month.

She could be a law student or scientist in the making …
Exactly ^^^^^
Be fair about this and pay her the best you can - of course within reason blah blah - I don’t think anyone is a ladies front bottom, on either side of the argument TBH. Sorry if I sound harsh.

You sound reasonable enough to me Stevie B.
