25 workers gave the ultimate sacrifice building this tunnel. I guess its not possible to avoid loss of life in a major project. But improvements have been made. The East-West Cross Island alpine road reportedly cost over 450 lives, including nearly 50 under one huge rock alone in taroko gorge (still buried under that rock today )

People drive slowly in it and keep their distance. For that reason alone it is the safest road in Taiwan.

Their ghost will haunt you as you drive through. If your famous you might even get a chance to retell your story on TV.

I think it has been dripping water somewhere, but nothing major. It’s safe, well built, and the drivers are very cautious inside. I would not worry.

Didn’t see a drop last Friday … they put the plug back I guess … it’s a safe, smooth ride and a faster way to the east coast … the view (decor) from Taipei to the tunnel entrance is stunning too … nice (hills) mountains …

No plug, just a little B&Q plaster. Saw them doing it last week. Should last about as long as the caulking around my bathtub.

Not to mention that there are no trucks or tour buses in it – they won’t be allowed to use the tunnel until next June at the earliest.

However, I’m longing for the day when they do let those monsters use it and take them off my dear old Beiyi No. 9 road. I much prefer using the old road to the new one, as I’d far rather spend the extra time to enjoy the much lovelier scenery. It’s going to be absolutely blissful to drive on that road when the big vehicles stop using it.

Oh, come on. They have those colourful murals in the tunnel every 10km or so. How can the Beiyi 9 compare?

yes beiyi number 9 is really a beautiful drive. I thought all the big trucks and buses already use the PINGHAI (coastal ) and dont use the number 9 anymore??

i think the tunnel should ONLY be for TRUCKS period. NO buses, no cars allowed due to the potential for major disaster . ONLY professional drivers of TRUCKS allowed in that tunnel.

then number 9 and binghai would be BLISS to drive without TRUCKS.

NO buses in new tunnel tho because of the numbers of people in them that would be at risk in the event the tunnel is breached, say in a quake.

I ben driving the road 5days a week since the second week after opening and until last monday.

I newer see anny water and it is defently the road in Taiwan I feel safest on(including crossing the street to buy milk in welcome)

I think it is safe enough if it didn’t leak and the sign worked ok. :stuck_out_tongue:
