Sure, but you also can just focus on one trait of a person, and momentarily disregard everything else. JD Vance for example, I disagree with his politics completely, but I think I appreciate the way he is able to communicate his thoughts. Lot of examples like that.
If they don’t tell them everything, the opposition party surely will.
I think most Taiwanese would be very happy to be sold peace if it came in the form of China deciding to stop threatening Taiwan and treating it as an independent nation instead. Most Taiwan would be very happy with that form of peace.
Not really, Taiwan is the most progressive country in Asia, “peace” would still mean total change in lifestyle and quality of life for the worse along with complete mind control and reeducation camps.
There’s no “peace” in that path, people should understand that with a Chinese takeover. We know this for a fact because China has done this repeatedly every time they take over new territories
Whoops! Now corrected!

As long as the CCP is in power, this dreamy outcome will not happen. We will remain independent and free (as we are today) OR we will be subjected to a brutal Xinjiang style reeducation under Beijing’s directions.
It’s up to the people of China to deal with their dictatorship before any such dreams (as noted above) could be realistic to people in Taiwan. And since there is no indication that changes are coming in China, here we are.

Yes it’s like having a crazy neighbour shouting out threats all the time. It’d be awesome if that neighbour either moved out or learned to be chill, much like the UK eventually learned to be chill regarding the existence of the Republic of Ireland next door. We’re still waiting to see that happen.
Guy
Yea let’s not bring the Canada Pension Plan into this.
Sure, but you also can just focus on one trait of a person, and momentarily disregard everything else.
What does this even mean?
JD Vance for example, I disagree with his politics completely, but I think I appreciate the way he is able to communicate his thoughts. Lot of examples like that.
The guy who has the charisma of the chesterfield he’s probably cheating on his wife with? That JD Vance?
Likeable?
I always had the idea of some form of “Greater China” where the PRC and Taiwan would be equal partners in a union that would allow Taiwan to be formally independent but closely tight to the PRC in terms of economic, cultural, and perhaps even military cooperation. The Chinese government will likely never give up the idea of governing Taiwan as just another province, but I think, if you want to change the status quo you need to break the mold and expand your horizon.
I do not believe anything the CCP promises. If China becomes a democratic country where the law actually protects liberty of the people, then I will be fine with Taiwanese people voting in favor of such a union. I personally want nothing to do with China in perpetuity, but I won’t consider people who wish to enter an EU styled alliance with China as traitors or sellouts if China is truly free.
I think, regardless of her policies and party membership, to me Zheng comes across as young, optimistic, proactive, and yes eloquent. 20 years or so on politics talk shows, how could she not be eloquent? I don’t like partisanship. “Not one of us? I don’t like anything about her” Why?
Vance is an opportunistic prick, but he knows how to talk and can clearly articulate his positions however horrible they might be.
Even Trump. He can be funny at times. Doesn’t make him a good person. Why not acknowledge something positive about him?

Qualities that will make her very useful to Beijing.
Caries Lam was viewed as a very successful public servant/official both before and after the handover of Hong Kong. Just look at how she betrayed the people of Hong Kong.

Especially if she’s naive and gullible too.

Definitely not, I suspect she knows exactly what she is doing.
I suspect she knows exactly what she is doing
She looked utterly miserable in the photo I posted above.
I wonder if she enough self-awareness to think: Fark I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

The same person who said " I supported Taiwan Independence, and left the DPP because I realized the DPP will never actually declare Taiwan independence." Then went on to join the KMT, refused to pass buget for buying approved American defensive weapons deal, and flew to Beijing for a photo op with Xi because that’s in support of Taiwanese independence?
I don’t consider logic failures as a sign of eloquence.
I don’t like partisanship. “Not one of us? I don’t like anything about her” Why?

Well… there have been many figures in history that can be described like that. If we don’t want to bring up the big bad, what about Putin? He’s pretty good at taking non-stop on TV, and very few Russians disliked him prior to the 3rd year of his special operation.
She looked utterly miserable in the photo I posted above.
I don’t put much into photos like that 1 second out of how many minutes. For all we know the photographer yelled something unpleasant.
Or tired, and mentally preparing to meet her master.
KMT core constituency? Pensioners who fled to the US.
Will she talk with Trump re Taiwan and China? Maybe about the arms shipments?? Maybe the pause can be permanent?!
There’s a grand deal to be had for Trump to sell Taiwan out.
She’s not the leader of Taiwan so wouldn’t break any conventions.
Taipei, June 1 (CNA) Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) said Monday her upcoming trip to the United States is aimed at helping keep the U.S. out of an “avoidable war,” and she expressed her willingness to meet U.S. President Donald Trump.
