I’m surprised no one has posted on this yet. But this should probably be here for the record.
Chou Hsi-wei (Zhōu Xí-wěi/周錫瑋 ) of the KMT recently declared that Chinese missiles are not really menacing Taiwan but actually protect it (“Zhōngguó dǎodàn shì bǎohù Táiwān”/中國導彈是保護台灣), mainly from the insidious Japanese and Americans.
That guy always looked more like the local gangster type of politician, more so than the insane Chinese ideologue type. One wonders about the (ahem) business interests informing these pronouncements . . .
If I were running the 2026 DPP campaign for mayor of Xinbei, I’d be including these views in some stump speeches . . .
Yeah, the CCP has been slowly buying off the KMT ever since the KMT ousted Lee Teng-hui, and by now their position on the Chinese Communist Party is unrecognizable as even just 20 years ago.
I’m glad the US Department of State is keeping tabs on this development, but from some of the videos I’ve seen by Chinese freedom fighters who escaped to the US and Canada, many of the so called “Sinologists” haven’t, and are still viewing the KMT through cold-war tinted glasses. Those Chinese freedom fighters have to call them out for it, and tell them that the DPP is the party that’s anti-communists and the KMT is anything but.
The current number of folks in Taiwan who identity as Chinese only seems to be around 2-3% of the population. With spouses here born in the PRC, that number will be sustained but will not grow.
Aside from some rabid Chinese nationalists who take up far more space than they deserve, the national identity question is no longer ambiguous. The political shell left over from the ROC’s take over in the 1940s however remains with us, continuing to cause all manner of grief extending outwards (examples: the ridiculous “Chinese Taipei” monicker chosen by the KMT dictatorship remains with us, as does the inappropriately named “China Airlines”).
These stupidities stick around as no-one here really wishes to poke the panda across the strait . . .
That may be the case. But the opposition party that represents significant proportion of the population, only identifies as Chinese. So that 2-3% gets blown out to a majority in the legislative yuan, and if they win the presidency the majority of the nation. It is ridiculous that the KMT stilll exists, but somehow it does.

“DPP is useless”, revenge and rich from a former DPP member who has been expelled from the party.
Also, while Taiwan as an island and actual entity has never been independent, very debatable too. Currently the Island of Taiwan with the Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu archipelagos are a separate and independent entity known as the Republic of China, distinct and older than the PRC.
These Fifth Column efforts are truly undermining the will to defend the island, despite China having 0% chance of actually occupying the island by force if Taiwan puts up regular level of resistance at this point .
The last time DPP scrambled for the recall elections, it ended up back firing, even though everything the pan-green camp said would happened if we didn’t recall those legislators, happened.
I have no idea. It feels like the more the DPP tries to do, especially when focusing on the national security issue, the more people get fatigued and choose not to do anything. If the KMT and the TPP’s constant implosions don’t tank their next election, then I’m really really worried.
I’ve met a couple of people here that completely agree with her views. They even think the DPP has turned people against those that continue to hold the views they were brought up with.
