How to bring parent to Taiwan as a dependent?

Sure. All Icon needs is to start a company build up the revenue to hire her mother as a manager. Shouldn’t take her too long should it?

Will the care taker go with her to the post office the bank and government offices?

So sounds like a completely different scenario.

Exactly!

Trump is 78 and he looks pretty healthy, both mind and body

Not all are. @Icon is even planning to pay for a caregiver

Well Trump isn’t Icons mother. He doesn’t require a care giver as Icon wrote she would need for her mother. Let’s get real.

Biden is sharp as a tack and can run rings around younget people as well.

Maybe he would make a good company manager for your business @jimbob132

LOL dunno how agreeable mom would be to getting married again.

I am at an awkward age, too young to retire, too old for a job back in the old country. Not to mention medical costs both for me and my mom at US like prices will break the bank.

It must be nice to have somewhere affordable and safe to go back to. That’s not my case. I thought about it, made the calculations, considered possibilities and it simply is beyond me.

Such is life. People think that @Fuzzy_Barbecue got his parents a dependent ARC. He did not. They are here on 1 year visa’s which have to be renewed overseas. Quite a process.

I don’t think any south American country has medical costs like the USA has?

But once they’re at the point of needing a caretaker… it could become a case of it being too stressful on them to fly.

I have an 86 years old grandma who wanted to come and visit me in Taiwan. But no airline would take her without medical clearance. Her doctors refused.

My mother is near 95 and cannot get medical clearance to fly to Taiwan.
She does not have a live in carer and does not line in an old persons home.

Sometimes life doesn’t give us what we want. Simply put, there is no way to bring a parent to Taiwan as a dependent for citizens or ARC holders.

That’s never true.

Let me rephrase that: too young to get my pension and live off it comfortably.

Comfort, next to cash, is king.

Yes, it’s quite a nightmare to deal with, as TECOs are often ignorant or refuse to follow what’s in the law. It’s not just me. I know other GC holders whose parents were refused the correct visa, or ran in to issues.

Every single time I’ve applied (since 2019), that’s been my experience. They have given wrong (i.e limited duration) visas to my parents many times (e.g. 3 months, 6 months-no extension). My parents passports have multiple canceled visas in them, because I had to fight MOFA to get them corrected.

Last year, I only succeeded to fix my father’s visa because a nice lady from TaiwanPlus helped me by calling MOFA directly, otherwise they had already resorted to ignoring my emails & calls by that point.

Just now, in Feb 2025, they again refused to issue the correct visa to my mother.

I had to sent them the law, both in English and Chinese, with specific articles highlighted, and I also sent them a copy of all their issued visas that had been cancelled (then replaced) by MOFA in Taiwan.

And, I asked them directly how they felt about wasting government resources ? and if they wanted me to get their next visa cancelled and replaced in Taiwan as well ? Thankfully, they issued the correct visa then.

But even with the correct visa, it’s a hassle. After each year of stay your parents need to do a visa run, which is difficult for someone like my father who needs a wheelchair, has diabetes, dementia etc.. and just completely unable to travel alone.

I am very interested in getting a caregiver, but I don’t know if it’s possible to do that for a foreigner like my dad who is only 73. I have been told that I either need 3 kids under 5 and / or parents who are 80+ or verified to have a certain level of diability. I don’t know if foreigner parents (on a visa) can get assessed for that or not.

If any one has done this, please let me know. I need this, as I am the primary caregiver each day after work and on the weekends. I could use some rest.

If you want a non-air method of doing a visa run, you can catch the ferry from Keelung to Fuzhou (via Matsu islands) and then back.

I admire your tenacity. Have you tried contacting someone higher up to get this sorted out once and for all? Taiwanese in particular don’t care about the actual law but rather what is mandated by the higher ups.

There is no dependent visa for an aged parent. This visa class does no exist. Gold Card can only bring parents on a temporary arrangement. No ARC

Yeah, I’ve heard from GC holders the exactly the same issue. May I ask, you managed to change your parents visa after they come to Taiwan with the “messed” visa, or you had to deal with that with MOFA from overseas?

Could you tell me where to find info on that limit. I was asking on another post and was told there is no limit.
