How to bring parent to Taiwan as a dependent?

Have you tried this route? I’m not sure if the wording means this only works for the first foreigner director (you) and doesn’t apply for the 2nd foreigner (your parent) and onwards. So your parent may need to be approved as a specialist:

“2.The first employee is exempted from the limit of education level regulated in the “Specialized or technical work”(Master degree or above, or Bachelor degree and with more than two years working experiences), and exempted from the limit of the amount of average salary (the salary shall be no less than NT$47,971 if there’s additional regulation). If the number of foreigners to be hired exceeds one (1), the related education level and the regulation of average salary follow the regulation of “Specialized or technical work.””

Yes! With this route only one person can get a director visa (plus his spouse as a dependent) but this strategy assumes that someone (acting person) already obtained resident status in Taiwan (ARC, APRC or naturalized citizen). But the relative needed to reside in Taiwan could be a formal director for a new company. Such kind of visa is quite popular for opening new business in Taiwan.

Is there a catch? This looks too easy. So basically come here with 500k and that’s it?

You do need to figure out the last two years of the necessary five years and probably be able to show NT$5 million in the bank if not earning much income as is likely. But I have heard of people solving the problem this way.

This popped up in my feed:

Is this true? Chinese spouses can bring parents but atoga turned ROC national can’t? That can’t be right… @Marco ? Any legal knowledgeable people?

Yes, you’re right.

Basically if you are a Chinese married to a Taiwanese you can bring your parents here (they can even get medical treatment).

This is something @fifieldt you really need to complain about. I didn’t know this before.

Ok, but maybe this is not the whole story. Maybe it is because the parents are considered ROC citizens?

In any case, it is necessary to understand if there is an angle here we can use to bring our elderly parents here.

There was that claim. But more recently things have changed.

Perhaps the angle could be “change the law for them or change it for us?”

Guys, I am at the point of I have to bring my mom somehow. Officials have told me maximum is 3 month visa. That ain’t gonna fly.

I can pay a local caregiver. I can pay for her meds and medical care, and I understand and agree she can’t have NHI through me -even though a Taiwanese in my country could, but let’s leave reciprocity aside. My hurdle is the visa. I am not confident on relying on a “special case” visa based on the good will of NIA, but it seems the only way.

Any ideas or suggestions?

This is a crap shoot and most don’t qualify but can you get a gold card maybe? Otherwise maybe try to get an ARC for her. Maybe an investment ARC?

I got the APRC. Dunno about changing it to Gold Card and I have no idea if run of the mill Gold Card holders can bring parents or only the extra super special ones.

As to the investment ARC, getting it for an 80 year old does not seem that very difficult but I don’t know where I’ll get the 5 mill in profits required. I’d be a bit concerned it is only for 3 years.

What about you opening a limited company and hiring her as the manager. It was my understanding that you can sponsor one foreigner work visa without the income requirement. Since you yourself don’t need a work visa, you are free to hire someone else.
Can anyone confirm this?

ETA. Looks like this was discussed in post #38

It’s certainly all Gold card holders. Dunno how it works if you already have an APRC. @Fuzzy_Barbecue might know more. IIRC he used his gold card to sponsor his dad.

Gold card gives up to one year at a time

But I don’t know how you can change from APRC to GC so this may not help

Yes hiring as a manager of your TW company works but the requirements to sponsor a foreigner manager work permit after the first year of operations from what I understand are 1000萬 revenue

Move to your mothers country?

Age limit for ARC work permits is 65. Icons mother is 80. Do you think an 80 year old is really going to move to Taiwan to start a business?

The only option is to get her a Taiwanese husband or wife.

Or… you could go back to your home country and take care of her there.

Who said anything about starting a business? A company manager is an employee, not to be confused with the company 負責人. I had no problems applying for a company manager work permit for my mom. There are specific requirements for being able to hire a foreigner company manager.

You run a business. Icon is a government employee with no business. Was you mother over 65 years of age?

How is an 80 year old going to get a work permit for a non existing business?
