How to register our child in New Taipei so they can attend local school?

I would really appreciate some advice. I am American, and my wife is Taiwanese. We live in New Taipei, but her household registration is in Tainan. We are expecting a child soon and want to make sure we can register the baby in New Taipei so they will be eligible to attend school here when the time comes.

We are currently renting, and it seems our landlord will not allow us to register our household at this address. I have an APRC.

What are our options for registering our child in New Taipei to secure school eligibility? Any guidance or experiences with a similar situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Illegal!

There are some rentals where the landlord lets you do this - search for the keywords 報稅 on 591 or some variation and you’ll find them.

There aren’t many, but they are the landlords doing things the legal way and reporting taxes. The rest won’t allow you to move household registration there because it means they have to pay more taxes. The landlords I found in the past who report taxes are usually companies that own the property, because they have to report all income.

If you want to stay at your current place, some options are:
1 - negotiate a new rent that allows you to move household registration over
2 - move HHR anyways and burn bridges with landlord (but may get kicked out before your newborn goes to school)

The Ministry of the Interior plans to introduce amendments to strengthen tenant rights.

Under the proposal, landlords who prevent tenants from applying for rent subsidies or registering their household will face penalties.

Thank you for the advice. If we got kicked out would we lose the household registration? Otherwise, it might be worth the risk.

Cant you show the school you lease contract???

As a homeowner, it takes a bit of time to get deregistered from the home. You don’t lose the household registration, it goes to the district hall iirc.

I have done the deregistration of a former tenant.
