That’s funny because when I visited HK this year it felt stuck in the 90s or 00s (except Central). Esp. Kowloon.
That’s funny. What part of it reminded you of Taiwan in the 90’s and 00’s?
Disneyland? The Ritz-Carlton? The air-conditioned MTR stations? The organized traffic? The accessible sidewalks on every street? The crosswalks in every intersection? The blind-friendly traffic signals and escalators? The lack of chaotic scooter traffic? The correct English grammar and spelling on all public signs? The presence of life guards at every beach?
The super rundown buildings, the markets inside super rundown buildings, the super cramped restaurants, the malls with very old fashioned designs etc.
The traffic is nothing special to me. The complaints about traffic in Taiwan are generally exaggerated.
Oh, so you mean it reminds you of Taiwan in 2023.
Actually most places in Taiwan aren’t that rundown anymore, which is why I was surprised by HK.
Jokes aside, I can only think of a small handful of actual malls in HK. Pacific Place in Admiralty, IFC in Central, Elements in Kowloon, Times Square in Causeway Bay, and maybe a couple of other older ones out in the suburbs. All of them were super modern the last time I was there 10 years ago, even by 2023 standards.
Which one did you go to?
There’s run down looking parts of Taiwan like wanhua, but there’s none of the crime or drugs.
Even after Typhoon beaches here do not look like this
Messy weekends in HK
At least they actually have real toilets in Hong Kong. You won’t find any squat toilets there.
I don’t mind the squatters actually quite like them sometimes
Why are squatters even made?
Perhaps that was the intent? You wouldn’t really want an actual subtropical forest - it’d just be a haze of mosquitoes.
Harbour City, which I guess is an old one. IFC too, probably not old fasioned per se but just kinda blah. I guess I prefer Japanese style malls which is basically every single mall in Taiwan.
I guess this planning didn’t include sidewalks
To be fair, Daan Park was the KMT’s first foray into this “park” thing. Up until then, their specialty had been removing existing park space as their unplanned way of settling their people on this island. I simply think they had no real idea what they were doing. That’s obvious when compared to the vastly superior and deeply impressive Botanical Gardens west down Heping (no need to go to Meiji Shrine for a contrasting example—it’s here in Taipei), planned by people who actually knew what they were doing . . .

All that stuff is what makes HK awesome!

Smoking everywhere just like it used to be in Taiwan. I had to stop at Hong Kong for a meeting. Could not believe how there is smoking freaking everywhere now. MTR, toilet stall at a high end mall etc. I wish we could have old Hong Kong back.
