Which cities would you rank in order from the one you most like to least like
Noxious.
I’ll play.
Taoyuan number one.
There are too many cities I haven’t spent enough time in. Taipei is by far the best city on this island though, in terms of being a global city with diverse districts and a ton of stuff to do. Better food, better entertainment, better transportation, better housing, but more expensive and crappy weather.
I live in Kaohsiung. Some days it’s okay. Some days I’m really damn tired of it. But all in all, it’s probably the second best city… even though it’s a huge drop between 1 and 2.
That was my first thought
This is how I feel about Taipei! Dealing with traffic tonight and an aggressive SUV jackass who almost pushed me off the road tipped my feelings into category two. Honestly the macho reckless driving here is enough to make me scream . . .
Guy
We have plenty of this down here, I don’t imagine there is a city in Taiwan without…
Can we trade? I love Kaohsiung so much, but sadly, my work and study places are here. I’d love to go to the beach more often. Also, people are way nicer down in the south.
I don’t drive so my perspective will be a bit different from the people that have the experience of being part of traffic.
- Taipei/New Taipei City
- Taitung
- Hualien
- Tainan
- Taichung
- Kaohsiung
- Yilan
- Zhongli
As OP asked, ranked from most liked (for me, have different view as retired, no need for conveniences, etc.):
Taitung
Kaohsiung
Tainan
Pingtung
Taipei City
No Zhongli on your list?
Guy
No NTC either.
How can anyone take it seriously if you don’t have Zhongli?
I haven’t spent that much time in most Taiwanese cities, and I honestly find most of them kind of grim. But I was very impressed with Kaohsiung. I found it very pleasant with nice wide open spaces, with all the conveniences of Taipei but far less intense. Taichung didn’t have all that much character, but it seemed like a pleasant enough place to live in.
As it stands:
- Kaohsiung
- Taipei City/New Taipei City
- Taichung
- Keelung
- Everything else
That happens in every major city. The driving and traffic in Kaohsiung is much worse. I regularly see scooters and cars zip through red lights, blue trucks bomb dangerously past parents walking their kids, and buses jumping curbs.
I like that intensity since I grew up in New York City. Kaohsiung is too boring and sleepy for me. The food in Taipei is also a hundred times better, especially foreign/western choices.
Yes. 100%! I’m tied down here due to job, family and apartment. If I could unshackle those bonds, I’d be so out of here. Taipei is more expensive than the rest of the island, but as far as global cities go it’s so much more affordable than most other major, developed cities in the world.
Taipei s tier (for taiwan) although the negatives are lack of open space, snobby people and shite weather.
Kowshung , Taichung both A tier. I really like both places. Kowshung has better public transport and better natural places( sea and mountains), more open spaces etc but its pretty sleepy too. Taichung is still decently vibey amd happening.
Yilan, tainan. B tier. Yilan is beautiful but the citys are fairly “bog standard taiwan urban center”
Tainan is nice.
Xinzhu and jilong are C tier. They are alright. They have their good points here and there but not amazing.
Taoyuan is shite besides daxi.
Hualian was great but ive only been there once so i cant really grade it.
And i havent been to the other places i didnt mention.
I love that creative spelling. Now I’m managing a city overrun by Taiwanese cows.
Interesting discussion so far. But have we not overlooked which city is best to reside as a @rooftopclown ?
