Thanks for the info on the Fuyuan Forest Resort, It sounds like, “pave paradise and put up a parking lot”. My friend who live in Taiwan said that most of the hiking trails are paved. I will be spending 4-5 days in Haualien, and I want to do some 5-8 mile hikes. Any suggestions? I would like to be on dirt!
Utter nonsense. Your friend doesn’t know what he or she is talking about. Most of the tourist “strolling trails” are paved, and this is what many Taiwanese consider to be “hiking,” but if you go into the mountains you’ll be hard pressed to find paved trails.
paved trails DO make it easier to spot the hundred-pacers. getting off the beaten track takes about two steps. keep an eye out for the reward.
