I need help with the best visa? I want to stay in Taiwan for a year

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I’m a Canadian permanent resident with a Philippine passport. My mom and brother are Taiwanese citizens, and I’d like to stay in Taiwan for about a year while continuing to work remotely for my Canadian employer.

I’ve looked into the Taiwan Gold Card and the Digital Nomad Visa, but from what I’ve read, I don’t think I qualify for either. My income is around CAD $4,500 per month, and I would be living at my mom’s house in Taiwan, so I wouldn’t need to rent a place.

A few details about my situation:

  • Philippine passport holder

  • Canadian permanent resident

  • Born in the Philippines

  • No Taiwanese citizenship, passport, household registration, or Taiwan ID

  • Mom and brother are Taiwanese citizens

  • My mom is not a natural-born Taiwanese citizen. She became a Taiwanese citizen and obtained her Taiwanese passport after getting married.

  • Planning to keep my Canadian job and work remotely while in Taiwan

Does anyone know what visa or residency options I should be looking into? Would my relationship to my mom make me eligible for any family-based visa or residence permit, even though I’m already 29 years old?

I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations from people who have gone through something similar.

Digital nomad visitor visa probably would fit best. Unfortunately Philippine nationals are not eligible.

Would you be able to get Canadian citizenship anytime soon? Then you would be eligible for the Digital nomad visa.

With a Philippine passport, this is going to be hard.

Like @slawa , I’d advise you to put in the time to get a Canadian passport, which will open up other possibilities.

To clarify, working holiday visa is also only an option with Canadian citizenship. Taiwan and Philippines do not have a working holiday visa agreement.

Taiwan is pushing most Filipinos into blue-collar work.

Unfortunately the earliest I’ll get my citizenship is around 2028.

For the visiting relatives for 180 days. Is it really bad to not tell them im working remotely?

You are right. Some sources were saying only nationals from visa-exempt countries.
But a few others were included as well. So that’s what you should apply.
Don’t work under visiting family visa!

I’ve found at times for some Taiwanese gov sites if on a VPN they don’t load. Could have been the possible issue.

Something to keep in mind though is the rule is nationals that are allowed visa-exempt entry can apply for the Digital Nomad Visa and for the Philippines that is effective until July 31, 2026 so might be safer to apply before then, last year though MOFA did announce an extension to this year a month before expiry.

You could try a studying Chinese visa? You would have to go to classes though and you would only be eligible for a work permit after 3/4 months of study.

As others have said, if you can wait until you have your Canadian citizenship then the working holiday visa option opens up - it isn’t a great option, I did this on an Australian passport, but it’s a legitimate option.

Is there anything you can do to increase your income and get a gold card?

I’m not sure how wealthy you are but there are also visa via investment routes. those come with a hefty price tag.
