…we’re still starting our vehicles with keys. Guy gets his license suspended for the umpteenth time for DUI, and keeps driving because he’s still got the keys to his car. Why not agree upon a standard, have the manufacturers switch over, and start our cars with a swipe of the driver’s license. No license, no driving.
… does food at the back of my fridge keep freezing?
… does the pvc pipe leading down from the roof to my washing machine on the balcony develop vapor lock so I can’t wash my clothes?
On the first question–the technology you’re talking about would have to come with an easy way to input new “permitted to drive this car” licenses, without allowing just anybody with a valid license to drive your car away.
In the U.S., they’d have to do a lot more standardization of licenses, to make them compatible with the swipe system. Another problem would be data privacy–swipe systems are apparently especially vulnerable to their cards being read without permission (cf. the recent U.S. passport changes).
My buddy bought a new Yaris and he says that he doesn’t have to put the keys in the ignition. He just has them in his pocket. When he walks up to the car, the doors unlock and all he has to do is push a buttonto start it.
I’m sure there could be something like that for those dastardly drunk drivers. I’m thinking thumb print scanners or retinal scanners. Could be hooked up to an in car radio that informs the police or something.
Guy gets his license suspended for the umpteenth time for DUI, and keeps driving because he’s still got the keys to his car.
Isn’t this a just a US problem ? Just by looking at the news… Mel Gibson, That Paris tart, that other “famous” bimbo etc… Is it even in the US that huge a problem ?
In the UK there are digital tachographs using a chipped card for larger vehicles so the technology’s probably there. Except who’s going to pay for it ? And what’s to stop you borrowing someone else’s licence ?
… does food at the back of my fridge keeps freezing?
Your fridge is turned up (or down) too much. And the stuff at the back is closer to the cooling equipment and further away from the door where the warm air gets in when you open it.
They should just impound the guy’s car in addition to his license. And if he gets behind the wheel of another vehicle, lock him away for a few years. If he’s caught drunk driving again after that, chop him into little pieces and feed him to the alligators.

You’ve got too much food in the fridge which is blocking air circulation between the cold air supply and the thermostat. Food near the supply gets too much cold air, and food near the thermostat doesn’t get enough.
Nah, we don’t need high-tech solutions for this one. It’s simple.
Anyone convicted of DUI gets their ride painted day-glow orange and fitted with lime green flashing lights and a kazoo-like klaxon that perpetually blasts out the tune of What Shall We do with the Drunken Sailor at 80 decibels. That, and their engine gets governed to 60 km/hr. After ten years of this and no further offenses, they’re permitted remove the klaxon.
A too full fridge seems likely. Damn these tiny, apartment-sized things. Mine wouldn’t even make a decent beer fridge.
Anyone willing to have a go at vapour lock? When it happens, I have to unhook the hose, let the water run, splutter, push the air through, then hook it up again.
I wonder why no one else wondered about anything here.
So this thread is open to everyone wandering off.
So long as you don’t wander off to the “I wonder if…” thread… that’s a whole other thread.
Ha…Ha! I Wonder Why so far got more hits then I Wonder If. Good job! Keep going!
I wonder if I should help I Wonder If getting more hits because Mucha Man is Hiking Club moderator and I am a member of Hiking Club. But I also wonder why I already have identified with Hiking Club. Is it because I had a lot of fun with river-tracing activities?
