Iconv.dll

I keep on getting this message on start up:

This application has failed to start because iconv.dll was not
found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

It doesn’t affect my computer, but it is very annoying. Please help.

Well, you have two choices.
You can either make sure you have that file, or you can cencel whatever application is trying to use it.
If you are sure you don’t have any dodgy software on your computer, then download and place that file where it is supposed to be (just Google “download iconv.dll”).

It usually goes in c:\windows\system ( or for Windows XP, c:\windows\system32 )

Do you know what software is causing this error?

I think it’s either skype or yahoo messenger.
I started after I got rid of a lot of software I downloaded.

Ok, so it’s something you would rather get rid of?
Are you on Windows XP?
If so, go to Start > Run.
Type “regedit” (without the quotes).

NOW LISTEN CAREFULLY. DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING UNLESS YOU ARE HAPPY TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU DELETE SOFTWARE THAT YOU NEED, AND DO NOT EVER DELETE ANYTHING IN THE REGISTRY UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING.

Look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run and look for one of these software packages that you are SURE you have uninstalled (IN THE RIGHT-HAND WINDOW). If you see one of them, then right-click on it and delete it. Now exit the registry editor.

EDIT: I may have misunderstood your intentions. You want to keep using Yahoo and Skype? In that case try what I said originally about downloading the missing file, or else just uninstall and reinstall Yahoo Messenger or/and Skype.

I do have the gimp. I have had it before and got rid of it, but I decided to download it again.

So it it sorted now?

No, I still have the problem.

And you downloaded the dll file, and put it where I recommended? And uninstalled and reinstalled yahoo and skype? And maybe added GIMP to that list?

I’ve been getting a similar error with MSVCRT10.dll, but after hitting OK 5 times, the app starts anyway, so I’ve been lazy about fixing this one. Today, spurred by the above suggestion, I downloaded it, but can’t figure out where to install it.

Try sticking it where I recommended sticking the other one. That’s the first place all DLL files USUALLY go (of course there are exceptions. It won’t do any harm to try though).

Also DB, do you know for sure which software is giving you this message? If so, try uninstalling and reinstalling it.
