If going to Indonesia, check updated visa rules
Some exceptions, from the article above:
Countries from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will still be able to enter the country visa-free.
Part of the rationale (other than an apparent government money grab for visitors using the now-required visa on arrival):
Recently Indonesia has focused on high value tourism and cracking down on antisocial behaviour, particularly in popular visitor destinations.
Balinese Governor Wayan Koster launched a communication campaign encouraging tourists to observe modesty and respect cultural differences on the island.
“There has been an increase in the number of foreign tourists in Bali who are behaving inappropriately, or taking actions that don’t adhere to their visa,” he said earlier this month.
Since the start of the year 130 tourists have been deported from Indonesia including Australian [name redacted] who was released from prison on June 6 after a drunken rampage in Aceh province.
That’s a lot of “tourists” deported!
Guy
OK, not for all! Changed title to selected peoples
I think that article is … untimely. Maybe 159 countries were disallowed VOA, but that was several months ago - because COVID. As of now 92 nationalities can get VOA, including both U.S. citizens and Japanese nationals according to this list.
Maybe this article helps clear it up.

It’s a cash grab. 900 nt each person for VoA.
You’re a cash grab.
seems so. Though Thailand charges Taiwanese more. Had Bangkok stopover on the way back from europe, meet my Taiwanese friend there she mentioned lots of Taiwanese and mainlanders in the VOA line, even with that Bangkok is full of Taiwanese, Chinese and other tourists.
Why don’t policymakers enact a VOA that fluctuates depending on misbehavior? If a certain nationality group keeps making trouble with arrests as the benchmark, the VOA increases by a steep margin? IF there are none, then there is no fee? Would be pretty easy to track and change, no?
Spain should do that with drunken Brits, not longer in the EU.
interesting idea, so Australians will have to pay more? They seem make more troubles in Bali
